Counselling & Psychotherapy

What is Counselling?
  • Counselling takes place because you recognize that you need help and support.
  • Gives opportunity to focus on and explore difficulties/problems that are affecting and causing concern, allowing you to work through them at your own pace.
  • Counselling is CONFIDENTIAL - that means I won’t tell anyone else about What you tell me, unless you tell me about significant harm to yourself or someone else or illegal actions.  This is explained to you in more depth at the initial interview.
The range of personal concerns you may wish to discuss can be very broad. If something is bothering you and getting in the way of your every day life, it may be useful to have counselling - whether it’s a current issue or something from  the past.

What actually happens?

The initial meeting usually takes up to fifty minutes and involves saying something about your current difficulties and a little about past and current events in your life. You will also be asked what it is you want to get from your counselling.
After your initial meeting an agreed  time and date for your counselling to commence will be made, this is usually the following week after your initial visit.  Counselling sessions are usually for fifty minutes at the same time each week.
The number of counselling sessions will depend upon the nature and complexity of your problem. Between 6 and 8 sessions is known as short term therapy. Each session will provide you with a safe space where you will be listened to and accepted without judgement.  Within this environment you will be able to  explore  what you  choose to bring, at  your own pace. Counselling is not about telling you what to do.  It gives you the opportunity to make your own choices.
