Voila! The new seat frame is in place. To get to this point, reverse the previous steps: First, if your chair has lumbar support, snap the black plastic clip to the back of the new seat frame. Attach the new seat frame to the swing arms with the hip pivot screws. You may have to wiggle the hip pivot screws around in their plastic gimbal mounts so that they point at the threaded inserts. Herman Miller's instructions say to tighten the hip pivot screws to 180-200 inch-pounds, using a torque wrench. Whoops! I don't have a torque wrench. Until I can borrow one from a friend, I did the best I could with my 6mm hex wrench. (Stay tuned.) Next, attach the seat links to the seat frame, using the bolts and lock nuts you removed previously. At this point, it's important to check older chairs to enusre that the original bushings are installed in the seat links. Tighten the 10mm lock nuts as far as they will go. IMG_2506.jpg

We got these chairs for $15 about 5 years ago from a friend's parents, who had them at their bay in an antique store. They need to be reupholstered, and the wood needs to be refinished. I actually stripped the old, cracked varnush of and tried to clean them up, but they didn't come out looking as good I'd hoped they would. I'm thinking of trying to reupholster them myself, and maybe paint the wood black. First I need to figure out to remove the back cushion, though.
