foul bay bike pocket at haultain
Foul Bay Road is a busy arterial linking Fort St. in Victoria through Oak Bay and Saanich up to the University of Victoria. It has bike lanes but is still a wide, straight corridor that encourages some speeding. The pictured intersection at is often used by cyclists connecting to Haultain, the cross street that has several other bike friendly features along its length. After a terrible accident crippling local cyclist Murray Drew we developed this design concept at the Saanich Bicycle Advisory Committee and I carried it to Oak Bay, who have municipal responsibility for this part of the road. While not as wide a pocket as we would like, it serves well enough for cyclists turning onto Haultain.
interurban bike pocket plus
Victoria's Galloping Goose regional trail overlooks this important link to suburban Interurban Road. To the right is a short trail that links up to the Goose. Across the crosswalk to the left, another local trail connects. Bike lanes on Interurban extend for several kilometres and are part of another regional trail corridor. The turn pocket for bikes supports the many cycling trips that use both Interurban and the Goose.
