Driving to Yosemite

There are four entrances into Yosemite National Park - three from the West and one from the East. If you are driving from Fresno, CA-41 is the best option. If you are coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, we recommend taking CA-41 if you are going directly to Tenaya Lodge, or CA-120 if you are going to Yosemite Valley. CA-120 is both the quickest and the most scenic route, CA-41 is best if you are coming from the South or Southwest, and CA-140 is best avoided in the summer as it often becomes congested due to a one-lane bridge just outside the park.

The map below shows routes on CA-120 (upper blue line) and CA-41 (lower blue line) from San Jose to Yosemite.

The last 70 miles or so of the drive are through the mountains, so if you aren't used to driving on tight, curvy roads, budget extra time, try to drive during daylight, engine brake on downhills and pull over to allow cars to pass if they are behind you.

Cellular reception in Yosemite and surrounding areas is quite poor, so don't rely on your smartphone for navigation or even for making calls - bring a map, GPS device with maps, or print out directions before heading out.
