Ali Mahdavi Amiri

I am a research faculty at the department of Computing Science, Simon Fraser University. I am also a committee member of Professional Master Program (Visual Computing). I lead and manage several industrial and research projects related to Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and also Computational Fabrication.

Previously, I was an NSERC postdoctoral fellow at GrUVi lab working with Prof. Zhang. GrUVi is the second best vision and graphics lab in Canada and is within 15 best labs in the world.

I received my PhD from the University of Calgary where I have been also a sessional instructor and a postdoctoral fellow at the department of computer science working with Prof. Samavati.

My main research interest is Computer Graphics with specialty in Geometric Modeling, Digital Fabrication, Machine Learning, and Computer Vision (Google Scholar). I have received several awards including NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, Graduate Achievement Award, Michael A. J. Sweeney Award, and Teaching Excellence Award.

[Sep 2020]. I gave a talk for Autodesk AI lab about my research on Computational Fabrication, Shape Analysis, and Data Augmentation.

[Aug 2020]. Our paper "VDAC: Volume Decompose-and-Carve for Subtractive Manufacturing " is conditionally accepted at SIGGRAPH Asia, 2020. This is our first collaboration with the University of Washington and in particular Dr. Adriana Schulz.

[Jul 2020]. Our paper "PIE-NET: Parametric Inference of Point Cloud Edges" is available on arXiv. This is my first collaboration with Google Brain and in particular Dr. Andrea Tagliasacchi.

[Feb 2020]. Our paper "RIAS: Repeated Invertible Averaging for Surface Multiresolution of Arbitrary Degree" is accepted in TVCG. I now officially have at least one paper in all major journals in Computer Graphics including TOG, CGF, TVCG, CAD, CAGD, C&G and GMOD.

[Nov 2019]. Our book Manual of Digital Earth for which I was the editor and co-author for two chapters is finally published and is available online.

[June 2019]. International Geometry Summit was successfully held in Vancouver, Canada, July 17-21. We had 12 keynote speakers as well as attendees from more than 20 different countries.

[Jan 2019]. Our patent, "Digital earth system featuring integer-based connectivity mapping of aperture-3 hexagonal cells" , is finally approved.

[Dec 2018]. I will officially hold a University Research Associate position from January 2019 at the department of Computing Science, Simon Fraser University.

[Aug 2018]. I will present our TOG paper, Semi-Supervised Co-Analysis of 3D Shape Styles from Projected Lines, at SIGGRAPH 2018.

[Jul 2018]. I will be the local chair of the International Geometry Summit, held in Vancouver, Canada, July 17-21, 2019. Please consider sending your contributions to one of the conferences and attending the summit. More coming!

[Jan 2018]. I will be the editor of two chapters in the "Manual of Digital Earth". One chapter on the Digital Earth platforms and the other on the applications of Machine Learning in Digital Earth.
