Mrs. Greiner Soon to Leave Position Here

Chemistry Teacher Plans to Leave at Close of First Semester.

Mrs. Alice Sweet Greiner, chemistry and biology teacher has resigned her position in Lincoln high school and plans to leave at the close of the first semester. Ms. Greiner has been in Webster City teaching Junior College and high school class for six and a half years.

Her Classes will miss her, perhaps, most of all, for her way of bringing in the human interest angle and the practical application of the subject.

Ms. Greiner told the reporter that she intends to have “a change of profession,” and put down test tube and Bunsen burner for a broom and dustpan. Mrs. Greiner was married in February, 1942 in Nebraska. That spring her husband went to the army, and she continued her work here as a teacher.

In 1927, Ms. Greiner was graduated from South Dakota State College. She spent the next two years teaching in Redfield, S. D. Mrs. Greiner then returned to her studies, and in 1931 received her Master of Science degree from the University of Nebraska, majoring in physical chemistry. Until 1933 she taught in the school at Spring Valley, Minn, and in the fall of 1938 began her teaching career in Webster City. She taught Junior College chemistry and high school chemistry and physics classes.

It is only natural that when a married woman is interviewed, the husband is mentioned. Her husband, Loren M. Greiner has just returned from almost two years overseas duty with the 81st chemical mortar battalion. Ms. Greiner mentioned a few of Mr. Greiner’s experiences overseas. She said, “He was in the front line region almost continuously from D-day on Normandy until V-E day, and was among the first troops to enter Paris and receive the welcome from the French.” The battalion was forced to dig fox holes in one of the prettiest parks in Paris, and were quartered in the big Eastman Kodak plant for a few days.

“The 81st went as far [east] as western [Austria]. [Original text says “west” and “Australia”] They also guarded a mountain laboratory in the Bavarian Alps which was an extension of the University of Munich. They had a trip to see the Eagles Nest and other parts of the Bavarian Alps before starting back.”

Mr. Greiner returned here after his discharge from the army early in September. He received a Presidential Citation, the Arrowhead for the Normandy beachhead invasion, five battle participation stars for front line action in Europe, and the good conduct citation. He has returned to his prewar job with the Soil Conversation Service in Nebraska, a part of Region Five. He reported for duty January 3. The Soil Conservation Service studies the soil and determines necessary measures to conserve it.

Mr. and Mrs. Greiner will make their new home in Wahoo, Nebr.
