Slinky
Slinky
Daily Shoot: January 12: Make a photograph of something shiny or glossy, but not transparent. Emphasize the effect of the surface. I learned some new tricks with light today thanks to this challenge. Actually, quite by accident. I was playing around with the various effects of lighting this slinky with lamps and in an effort to get a more diffused type of light, I reached for a piece of paper to bounce the light off. The paper I happened to grab was pink. *G* Not one I would have grabbed on purpose but I tried it anyway to see what effect it would have and the above is that effect. It turned my black background red! I was hooked and played around with that pink paper and various angles to bounce the light off it and was quite impressed at the results. I got a few shots I really liked actually, but I settled on this one for the daily shoot. This photo has been processed very little. I added the two borders and my name and otherwise the only processing was to turn up the contrast a very slight amount and to remove some dust particles from the glass. 111 Pictures in 2011: #77 Children's Toy

The Peep Show, c. 1890 Bound Childrens' Magazine
This bound volume of a year of the childrens' magazine "The Peep Show" is not dated but it carries an inscription "Bertha Ashton from her loving Father Xmas '91". It appears to be a years worth of morality tales, illustrations of children and animals, and educational instruction. It is very much in the usual line of children's publications of the late 19th century. We bought it for the title since we collect optical toys. On examination of the illustrations and stories we discovered that the name "Peep Show" did not refer, as it usually does, to the view boxes containing pictures and objects that are viewed through a lens but rather to a magic lantern. Since we collect magic lanterns we were still pleased to have it. I have posted some of the illustrations.
