Born on October 20th 1876 near Orangeville, Ontario, Canada.
Painted landscapes and portraits in regions including Lake Simcoe, Snake Island, Georgian Bay, Newmarket, Toronto and other regions in Ontario.
Trained at the Toronto Art Academy in his teenage years. At the age of 19 he worked for sign manufacturer George Booth and Son where he painted signs and advertising billboards. In addition during his employment there he became a master in Old English gold leaf lettering applied to the glass doors of professional offices. This was highly skilled work and he was the company's expert in the field. Much later in life he became a senior partner of the company.
He was married and had three children: Robert, Margaret and William. Both sons died in their late childhood years: The elder from Endocarditis (inflammation of the heart) which developed as a complication from having his tonsils removed in a time when antibiotics had yet to be invented and later the younger from Tetanus (Lockjaw) which developed from a serious wound inflicted by the kick of a horse in a time when the Tetanus vaccine had yet to be developed. Consequently both children suffered slow, painful deaths. Needless to say, this was very hard on Huston, his wife and his surviving daughter Margaret who lost both of her brothers. Margaret lived into her eighties and had two children, both of whom are still living in Ontario and have families of their own.
In his later years Alex Huston studied with Canadian artist and Group of Seven member Franz Johnston in the Georgian Bay area. Huston recollected that Johnston admired his sense of colour.
Huston's paintings are mostly in the hands of his descendants and many were given away by him as gifts. A number of them were stolen from his daughter's residence at various times over her lifetime. Huston painted without concern about official recognition and did not seek fame or fortune. He painted because he enjoyed it. In sympathy with this spirit of his, these images are being made available online for the first time for those interested in Canadian Art and Artists.
