The Houses of Horror - 39 Hilldrop Crescent, Camden Road, Holloway, London
The Houses of Horror - 39 Hilldrop Crescent, Camden Road, Holloway, London
Dr Crippen lived at 39 Hilldrop Crescent in Tufnell Park (now demolished), where he famously murdered his wife. Number 39 Hilldrop Crescent was one in a block-long row of three-story dull-brick detached townhouses near Camden Road, in Holloway, North London. By 1910, the neighborhood had slightly fallen off the social scale and sat balanced between the starched-collar middle-class and the gingham quilt of working laborers. Yet, the genteelness of the Crescent remained steadfast in appearance, maintaining a picture-perfect aura, just the proper stones throw away from the hustle and bustle of the City of London to remain thoughtful in manner and serene in thought. Cobble-stoned, tree-lined and pert, Hilldrop Crescent, Holloway, didnt match Inspector Dews image as a place of foul play. Hawley Harvey Crippen (11 September 1862 – 23 November 1910), usually known as Dr. Crippen, was an American homeopathic physician hanged in Pentonville Prison, London, England, on 23 November 1910, for the murder of his wife, Cora Henrietta Crippen. He was the first criminal to be captured with the aid of wireless communication. Crippen was born in Coldwater, Michigan, to Ardesee Skinner and Myron Augustus Crippen, a merchant. Crippen graduated from the Michigan School of Homeopathic Medicine in 1884. Crippen's first wife, Charlotte, died of a stroke in 1892, and Crippen entrusted his parents, living in California, with the care of his two-year-old son, Hawley Otto. Crippen became a homeopathic doctor and started working for Dr. Munyon's, a homoeopathic pharmaceutical company. His second wife was Corrine "Cora" Turner (stage name: 'Belle Elmore'), born Kunigunde Mackamotski to a German mother and a Polish-Russian father. She was a would-be music hall singer who openly had affairs. In 1900 Crippen and his spouse moved to England. His US medical qualification was not sufficient to obtain a doctor's position in the UK. After living at various addresses in London, the couple finally moved to 39 Hilldrop Crescent, Camden Road, Holloway, London, where they took in lodgers to augment Crippen's meagre income. After a party at their home on 31 January 1910, Cora disappeared. Hawley Crippen claimed that she had returned to the US, and later added that she had died, and had been cremated, in California. Meanwhile, his lover, Ethel "Le Neve" Neave (1883–1967), moved into Hilldrop Crescent and began openly wearing Cora's clothes and jewellery. The police were informed of Cora's disappearance by her friend, strongwoman Kate Williams, better known as Vulcana, but began to take the matter more seriously when approached by John Nash, the husband and manager of Lil Hawthorne. The house was searched, but nothing was found, and Crippen was interviewed by Chief Inspector Walter Dew. After the interview (and a quick search of the house), Dew was satisfied. However, Crippen and Le Neve did not know this and fled in panic to Brussels, where they spent the night at a hotel. The following day, they went to Antwerp and boarded the Canadian Pacific liner SS Montrose for Canada. Their disappearance led the police at Scotland Yard to perform another three searches of the house. During the fourth and final search, they found the remains of a human body, buried under the brick floor of the basement. Sir Bernard Spilsbury found traces of the calming drug scopolamine. The corpse was identified by a piece of skin from its abdomen; the head, limbs, and skeleton were never recovered. Crippen and Le Neve fled across the Atlantic on the Montrose, with le Neve disguised as a boy. Captain Henry George Kendall recognised the fugitives and, just before steaming out of range of the land-based transmitters, had Telegraphist Lawrence Ernest Hughes send a wireless telegram to the British authorities: "Have strong suspicions that Crippen London cellar murderer and accomplice are among saloon passengers. Mustache taken off growing beard. Accomplice dressed as boy. Manner and build undoubtedly a girl." Had Crippen travelled 3rd class, he would have probably escaped Kendall's notice. Dew boarded a faster White Star liner, the SS Laurentic, arrived in Quebec, Canada ahead of Crippen, and contacted the Canadian authorities. As the Montrose entered the St. Lawrence River, Dew came aboard disguised as a pilot. Canada was then still a dominion within the British Empire. If Crippen, an American citizen, had sailed to the United States instead, even if he had been recognised, it would have taken an international arrest warrant followed by extradition proceedings to bring him to trial. Kendall invited Crippen to meet the pilots as they came aboard. Dew removed his pilot's cap and said, "Good morning, Dr Crippen. Do you know me? I'm Chief Inspector Dew from Scotland Yard." After a pause, Crippen replied, "Thank God it's over. The suspense has been too great. I couldn't stand it any longer." He then held out
PM VISIT FISHING COMPANY BALI, INDONESIA
PM VISIT FISHING COMPANY BALI, INDONESIA
PM VISIT FISHING COMPANY BALI, INDONESIA FRIDAY 8 APRIL, 2011: Prime Minister Bainimarama and his delegation comprising of the Chairman and CEO of the Fiji Trade and Investment Bureau, Mr Adrian Sofield and Mr Ravuni Uluilakeba respectively, visited the Head office and operation base of the Gilontas Indonesia Friday after his visit to Jarkarta for the opening of the Fiji Mission and on his way to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Gilontas Ocean is a fishing company that has been operating the past thirty-five (35) years and developed expertise in the fields of capture, processing and marketing. A philosophy that has marked the success of Gilontas is the creation of synergies with the local authorities and communities in all aspects of its operations. It has been successful in Indonesia and is already setting up its operation in Fiji where it hopes it will also be as successful in the least. A hall mark of the Company is its respect and adherence to conservation of the stocks, the protection of the environment and the compliance to standards such as the rigorous one pertaining to the European Union The Prime Minister and his delegation were given a briefing and a guided tour of the processing facility which was principally for exports of mainly tuna species to the United States, Japan and Europe. The Prime Minister commented after the visit that he was extremely happy and excited that Gilontas has decided to set up shop in Fiji and that he and his office will do everything possible to ensure this becomes a reality to its fullest. His emphasis on the development of the fisheries sector, which included a specific focus on the tuna industry given the various developments elsewhere in the world, and the many prospects for economic and social advancement for the rural and marine-based communities of Fiji, will be further enhanced by the setting up of Gilontas in Fiji. The Prime Minister and his delegation were later visited at his hotel by the Governor of Bali, the Hon Mr Made Mangku Pastika. The duo discussed a range of issues including tourism where the latter spoke of the uniqueness of Bali and Fiji in building resilient industries based on the uniqueness of their cultures and traditions which he added must be nurtured and kept at sustainable levels. The Governor also informed the Prime Minister of the existence of a Tourism University to which interested individuals from Fiji are most welcomed to attend and at the same time be exposed to the Bali industry. The Governor believed in networking as the basis for sharing the many visitors and tourists that are in search for variety and new experiences. The Governor also expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for the lead role that Fiji played in Indonesia’s inclusion as an Official Observer at the recently concluded Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Meeting which the Prime Minister chaired. The Prime Minister was happy that was the case given Indonesia’s strategic importance as the bridge for the MSG Group of countries and indeed the Pacific as a whole to the fast developing economies of Asia in which Indonesia herself is a leader. And on Papua where the Governor was Police Chief for a number of years, both agreed that as engagement and dialogue was essential such as was started at the margins of the MSG meeting where boarder security issues were discussed between the delegations of PNG and Indonesia. The Prime Minister’s delegation was supported by Ambassador Cavuilati of the Fiji Mission in Jakarta and PSO Penioni Naliva of the Prime Minister’s Office. Prime Minister Bainimarama and PSO Naliva left for Malaysia Friday evening where the Prime Minister was to address the Fiji students studying in various learning institutions there.
