Phonics and Reading

At Alburgh with Denton Primary School we use the 'Read Write Inc.'scheme to teach phonics daily across Reception and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) and also to those children in Key Stage 2 who need extra phonic support:

For children with Special educational Needs or those who need extra support with phonics, we deliver the Sound Discovery intervention programme to small groups and individuals:

We use the following reading schemes in school:
  • Oxford Reading Tree
  • Project X
  • Project Code
Children will also undertake regular individual and guided reading in school.

Older or more able readers have the choice of reading any of the books in our library. We encourage our children to use the library as often as possible and all children have access to our Junior Librarian system which allows them to borrow and return books independently when they wish.

We also run a Book Review scheme where, once children have finished a book, they write a short review for their peers. These reviews are kept in the library and children use them to make recommendations to each other and share opinions about the books.

Our children also have access to 'First News' which is a national children's newspaper, delivered to school every week and 'Aquila' Magazine which is designed to stretch and challenge those more able readers.
