Elephant #184, "The Human Disease"
This pale elephant is number 184, "The Human Disease", by Nathan McKenna. It's located in the lobby of the Hoxton Hotel on Great Eastern Street. Initially it looks a bit uninspiring until you look more closely at the spots the poor elephant is suffering from, and realise they're human figures. What an inspired way to bring attention to the pressure on the asian elephant's natural habitat from ever expanding human population. Artist's Inspiration - quoted from the elephant auction site: "Crowds of people both fascinate and depress me. We're unable to really grasp the insignificance of our personal sense of "I" whilst simultaneously unaware of the massive effect we have on our planet and our fellow Earthlings, the animals. Understanding that we are an organism is an important realization in the consciousness revolution." IMG_23504, 30%

Construction on the 105 story complex began in 1987 and halted in 1992 when the collapse of communism in Europe threw North Korea into financial difficulties. The colossal white elephant dominates Pyongyang's skyline. Construction has resumed since early 2008 with funding from the Egyptian firm, Oruscom Group. The building in the foreground is an indoor stadium.
