As the State Oil Marketing Organization is responsible for oil sales for all of Iraq, I’m surprised that we are only now getting to the site for a damage/reconstruction assessment. The location is along a main roadway in central Baghdad but is somewhat set off by itself. The feel is of a campus as there is housing for the affiliated workers on the grounds. All-in-all, there is a pleasant feel to it, until you get close enough to see the damage. Fire has blackened an area of the exterior of the building. A relatively small part of the building was burned by looters and the untouched sections are still occupied by the SOMO staff. I’m not sure how effective they can now be, but they are at work trying to regroup. Some of the senior staff says that they drove off the looters before they did too much damage. The Iraqi engineers do a thorough job of their assessment to include the audio-visual equipment in the conference center. I encourage them to be inclusive, as this may be their only chance for any reconstruction assistance from the “coalition”.Canon CES 2011 02 copy
