Alberni Wrestlers compete in Victoria at Island 15 and Under

A group of wrestlers from Alberni made the trip down to Victoria early Saturday morning to compete at the Island 15 and Under, hosted by the Victoria Bulldogs. The tournament had a number of teams coming from the Island and two from the Lower Mainland.

The Island 15 and Under is designed for wrestlers in grade 10 and younger to compete against each other in a variety of weight classes. The young Alberni wrestlers preformed very well and showed once again that Port Alberni has very strong programs. In the over-all team competition the ADSS boys team was 2nd and the ADSS girls were 7th. Dunn Middle School placed 3rd in the Girls Division and 8th in the Boys Division. The Neill Middle School girls though small in numbers managed to place 9th in the team standings. A number of Alberni’s experienced wrestlers elected to take the weekend off as they prepare for the Western Canadian Age Class in Kamloops this week.

Five Alberni wrestlers claimed gold medals in their respective divisions. On the girls side Kalissa Montgomery (36kg Dunn) and Julia McGowan (70 kg Dunn) went undefeated. On the boys side Dean Leyland (63 kg ADSS), Nolan Badovinac (74kg ADSS) and Riley Neville (Light HWT ADSS) were dominant in their weight classes and claimed gold medals as a result.

Earning silvers in their divisions were Jodan James-Higgins (36kg Girls Neill), Micaela Dick (60 kg Girls Dunn), Russell David (54 kg Boys ADSS), Oliver Witham (60kg Boys Dunn), Tristan Schultze (Light HWT Boys ADSS) and Aaron Prest (HWT Boys Neill). Michel Kurucz (60kg Girls) and Johannes Kulich (66kg Boys) rounded out the medal placings for ADSS by earning bronze medals.

Placing fourth in their weight classes were Morgan Dagenais (52kg Girls Dunn), Lauren Barker (56kg Girls ADSS), Trevor Barker (35kg Boys Dunn), Noah Roberts (63kg Boys Neill), and Ben Salitter (74 kg Boys Neill). Isabella Jones (5th 52kg Neill), Grace Deutsch (5th 60kg), Ally Cyr (5th 46kg) and Corrine Gough (6th 46kg) rounded out the girls placings. While Daniel Spencer (5th 41kg Neill) , Aaron Badovinac (6th 48kg Dunn), Tyler Drew-Adams (6th Light HWT Dunn) rounded out the placings on the boys side.

Dunn wrestling coach Russell Bodnar reflected on the Alberni wrestlers’ performances. “The tournament went well. For the most part we brought our intermediate wrestlers to this tournament. These boys and girls represent the future of our program. If they continue to work hard, practice and develop they will be ready to be our future elite and senior wrestlers.”

“I was impressed by a lot of wrestlers today,“ commented Dunn coach James Messenger. “Three performances that really stick out to me are actually from wrestlers that didn’t go undefeated. Tristan Schultze, Oliver Witham, and Lauren Barker are three wrestlers who showed that their hard work and determination is starting to pay off. They work hard every practice and I think each of them is starting to turn a corner with their development. They weren’t on the top of the podium today but give it time. I am looking forward to what the rest of the season has in store for our team.”

On Thursday morning over fifty wrestlers and coaches from the Alberni Valley will leave for Kamloops to compete in the Western Canadian Age Class. The tournament will feature wrestlers from BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
