Wrestlers Successful at War on the Floor Tournament

Armada wrestlers performed to expectations at the annual War on the Floor Wrestling Tournament at Pinetree Secondary this past weekend. The local program took a strong group over for the Grade 8-12 Novice events on Thursday and the Elite category on Friday and they didn’t disappoint. Alberni wrestlers captured eight gold, one silver and four bronze medals and had another ten wrestlers place in the top six at this very prestigious mainland event.

The War on the Floor is one of the more challenging and important tournaments of the year as it is a national qualifying tournament. “I was particularly impressed with our junior varsity wrestlers. For most of these athletes, it was their first competition at a higher level and the experience they gained from this tournament will bode well for the rest of the season,” stated Armada Head Coach John McDonald.

On Thursday, Daniel Spencer (70kg), Scott Coulthart (74kg), Jayce Clayton (74kg), Trevor Barker (45kg), Kylea Anderson (90kg), Kiarra Fong (54kg) and William Merry (HWT) went undefeated to claim gold medals in their respective weight divisions. Winning bronze medals were Circe Campbell (54kg) and Jayden Iversen (66kg). Rounding out the placings for the Novice competition were Ethan Tramer (57kg) 4th, MacKenzie Boudreau (64kg) and Trenton Vanderkooi (HWT) with 5th.

“It was nice to see some of our former middle school athletes make the adjustment to the junior varsity program and have success,” commented Coach James Messenger. “Impressive performances by Jayce Clayton and Kiarra Fong were highlights of the day and were a result of the tremendous amount of dedication and hard work both of these individuals have put into practices early this season.”

Friday morning wrestlers weighed in to compete in the War On the Floor Elite Tournament. The Elite Tournament is always a highly competitive tournament and features some of the best wrestlers in Western Canada.

The Armada is a young squad, primarily consisting of grade 8-10 athletes along with three grade 11’s. The ADSS team was led by an outstanding performance from grade 10, Aaron Badovinac, winning a tough 70kg weight class. “I thought Aaron showed great poise and composure to come from behind and beat a 2014 provincial medalist to claim gold,” explained Coach Chris Bodnar.

Seth Price, second at 41kg, and Isaac McDonald, third at 54kg, also had terrific performances. Both athletes wrestled great, each losing a close match. Other placers at the Elite event included Trenton Vanderkooi (HWT) and Kylea Anderson (90kg) at 4th, Trevor Barker (45kg), Jayce Clayton (78kg), Kiarra Fong (54kg) and Morgan Dagenais (54kg) at 5th and Circe Campbell (54kg) at 6th place. “The talent and character of our young team is outstanding,” said Coach McDonald. “Our elite athletes are some of the best in the province and our future is bright.”

The local squads continue practices over the holidays but their next competition isn’t until after the Christmas break. Some wrestlers will likely head to Christmas camps in the lower mainland and the Island in preparation for a very busy January and February. The annual Alberni Armada Invitational is scheduled for February 5-6th this season.
