Port Authority Pins Down Title Sponsorship with 2018 BC Wrestling Championships

The Port Alberni Port Authority (PAPA) has signed on to be title sponsor of the 2018 BC Secondary School Wrestling Championships held right here in Port Alberni March 1 – 3, 2018.

“We are excited to come on as a title sponsor in support of this year’s BC Wrestling Championships,” stated Dave McCormick Director of Public Relations and Business Development for the Port Authority. “The Championships are a great opportunity to showcase not only the best in BC High School Wrestling but the best in our community as well. Approximately six hundred athletes are expected to compete. Travelling to support those athletes will also be coaches, supervisors, parents and families. That is a lot of exposure for our community. Sponsoring this event allows us to support something that is great for our community and also create exposure for our businesses; especially China Creek Campground. It’s a great partnership.”

With local hotels and restaurants operating at capacity March 1 - 3 the Port Alberni Port Authority has a vested interest in raising its profile. Operating the shipping terminal is only one aspect of PAPA’s operations. PAPA is also responsible for operating Fisherman’s Harbour, Harbour Quay Marina, Clutesi Haven Marina, and China Creek Marina and Campground. The campground will be open for all visitors with a 2 nights for the price of 1 promotion (quote: BC Wrestling). The amazing natural, waterfront location provides a great atmosphere to rest and recharge during the competition.

“Wrestlers and their families travelling to Port Alberni for this year’s championships are very familiar with Port Alberni’s rich history and excellence in the sport of wrestling but they might not be aware of the recreational opportunities that Port Alberni offers outside of wrestling,” noted Tournament Co-Chair James Messenger.

As a title sponsor PAPA will be prominently displayed and promoted throughout the three days of the event. Along with more traditional promotional strategies organizers are looking at creative ways to highlight some of the great recreational and business opportunities that are available at Port Authority facilities, such as China Creek Campground, and Centennial Pier & Tyee Landing in the heart of the city’s active waterfront

“Most of the wrestlers come from major urban centers, they are city slickers, for lack of a better term. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get them out to China Creek Marina & Campground to walk around and maybe roast a marshmallow. We would love to be able to set that up for a few of our visiting teams. Maybe they will bring their families back in the summer to fish or camp,” said James Messenger.

On March 1-3, the Port Alberni Port Authority and Armada Wrestling Team are ready to show the rest of British Columbia what makes Port Alberni a great place to live, play….and wrestle. Mark these dates on your calendar so you can be part of the excitement and a great community event.
