Cougar Invitational (Chemainus)
A large group of Alberni Wrestlers representing Neill and Dunn middle schools and part of the ADSS team travelled down to Chemainus last weekend to compete in the Cougar Invitational Wrestling Tournament hosted by the Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club. The group of Alberni Wrestler competed very hard and represented themselves and their schools extremely well during this one day tournament.
Over all ADSS was 3rd in the Senior Division despite not having their full squad at the event. ADSS also finished 5th in the Junior Division. The rest of the ADSS team competed in Vancouver at the Roberts Rumble. Dunn Middle School had a strong performance from their wrestlers to finish third overall in the Junior Division
In the Senior division ADSS was led by their big guys in the heavier weight classes. ADSS had gold medal performances from Christian Anderson, Cole Walton and Riley Neville. Janelle Beckett and Sheldon Haddad were silver medal winners while Tristan Schultze and Samantha Anderson received bronze medals. Isabella Larson was fourth in her weight class.
Winning their weight divisions and bringing home gold medals in the Junior Division were Teela Johnson and Jessica Finlayson of Neill Middle School. Eryk Cardinal of ADSS had a gold in the Junior Division as did Dunn’s Michaela Dick. All of these wrestlers had an outstanding tournament against some stiff competition according to coach Russell Bodnar. .
Silver medals were won in the Junior Division by Kalissa Montgomery (Dunn), Breylyn Hutchings (Dunn), Johannes Kulich (ADSS), Ben Salitter (Neill), Tyler Drew-Adams (Dunn), Chris Kurucz (ADSS), Anthony Ashby (Dunn), Michel Kurucz (ADSS) and Jamie Durning (Dunn). Junior bronze medalists were Remi Wells (ADSS) and Aarron Prest (Neill). Raven Gagnon of Dunn was 4th and teammate Trevor Barker 5th. Corrine Gough of Neill had a 6th place finish.
Coach Jason Wolf of Neill was extremely pleased with his young team. “We were only able to take 6 wrestlers to Chemainus and 4 of our 6 wrestlers finished in the top 3 of their weight classes. We hope to see more kids coming out for wrestling at Neill as we have a rich history of the sport at that school.”
The valley wrestling coaches wanted to congratulate all the wrestlers who competed at the Cougar Invite. Alberni Wrestling have sent over another large group to Vancouver on Thursday and Friday of this week to compete in the SFU War on the Floor 9-10 novice and the SFU Elite. Good luck to all the wrestlers competing in the final tournament before the Christmas Break.
