Alberni Wrestlers Perform at the Cougar Invite

Alberni Wrestlers from EJ Dunn, AW Neill and Alberni District Secondary travelled to Duncan to compete in the Cougar Invitational on Saturday. Wrestlers from all three schools had a strong showing at this tournament, which featured athletes from all over the Island and some schools from the lower mainland. The tournament awards their team titles by combining standings in the male and female divisions. At the end of the day ADSS and EJ Dunn finished second in the Senior and Junior Divisions, while Neill Middle School placed tenth in the Junior Division.

Remi Wells (57kg), Jordan Wagner (55 kg), Nolan Badovinac (80 kg) and Christian Anderson (90kg) led the way for the ADSS senior team going undefeated to claim gold medals in their respective weight classes. Micaela Dick (2nd at 67kg), Jesse Wagner (2nd at 55 kg), Dean Leyland (2nd at 68kg), Eryk McKenzie (3rd at 68g) also added to the Senior teams medal count. Emma Vanderlee (4th at 67kg), Jarred Beckett (4th at 51kg), Johannes Kulich (4th at 68kg), Kaden Tardiff (5th at 68kg), and Ben Salitter (5th at 67kg) added valuable team points. The ADSS Seniors finished with a total of 62 points, narrowly edged out by Esquimalt Secondary who finished with 63 points. The Cowichan Wrestling Club finished with a distant 44 points for third place in the Senior Division.

“It would have been nice to win the team title today. But we plan our practices and season to have our peak performance in February/March. You have to build up to get to that point. I am happy about where we are in terms of our development,” concluded ADSS Coach Chris Bodnar. “Individually we had a number of highlights. I was pleased with how everyone did. We have come to expect seeing Badovinac and the Wagners medal. I was really impressed by the undefeated performances of Christian Anderson and Remi Wells. Both are working really hard and I think they are going to turn a corner in their development this season.”

EJ Dunn Middle School’s wrestling team had an outstanding performance to finish second in the Junior Team standings. EJ Dunn was beat out only by the Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club. “The Cowichan Wrestling Club is comprised of athletes from Victoria to Nanaimo. They have over 10 different schools competing under one team. As the tournament host they can opt to do that. We were the top placing school program,” commented Dunn Coach Jen Johnson.

The EJ Dunn Seahawks were led by the gold medal performances of Summer Wass (47 kg) and Aaron Badovinac (54 kg). Kalissa Montgomery (2nd at 45kg), Morgan Dagenais (2nd at 51kg), Ravi Manhas (3rd at 35 kg), Matthew Grimston (3rd at 60kg) and Austin Patten (3rd at 63 kg) also finished with medals in the Junior Division for EJ Dunn. Neill Middle School also had three athletes place in the Junior Division. Daniel Spencer (2nd at 54kg), Bella Jones (3rd at 54kg), and Tristan Green (6th at 51kg) helped a small but hardworking team from Neill finish in 10th place.

“We had a number of Grade 6 athletes who we had compete in the younger Grade 5 & 6 Division as well,” stated Neill Coach Russ Bodnar. “It was nice for them to have a tournament where they were not in the bottom of their age division. Our Grades 6s had success which is a good reward for their hard work and dedication in the sport. They did not calculate team points in this division.”

Ally Flaro (Dunn 1st at 46kg), Laticia Estrada (Neill 1st at 59kg), Nathan Stellard (Dunn 1st at 43kg), Austin Lambert (Dunn 1st at 50kg), Yannick Contant (Dunn 1st at 59kg), and Tyrone Tate (1st at 84kg) were undefeated in this younger age division. Kylea Anderson (Dunn 2nd at 58kg), Jarrod Gagnon (Dunn 2nd at 59kg ), Owen Spencer (Neill 3rd at 33 kg), Austin Saluk (Dunn 3rd at 59kg), and Cailin Gillis (Dunn 4th at 37kg) all placed in the Grade 5/6 Division.

Alberni wrestlers will be training hard in preparation for some important competitions prior to the winter break. The majority of the ADSS team have been selected to compete as members of an Island Elite Team at the Abby Invitational December 8th. The entire team will compete at the War On the Floor Tournament in Langley December 20th and 21st. Neill and Dunn wrestlers are preparing for the first of their dual meet matches at Dunn December 12th
