Announcements

2017 Elections are coming up soon.

We need a volunteer to run the upcoming election for the LocSec and Vice LocSec positions.  The Election Chair position is almost no work at all because it is pretty much automated, but we do need a member to fill it.  Please contact Denise Yancey at yancey@alaska.net if you would be willing to help.

We  are also actively seeking Mensa members who are interested in running for the LocSec and Vice LocSec positions.  See the Bylaws to understand the duties.  Once we get an election chair, please contact that person to put your name in. Every club and organization occasionally needs a change of leadership to keep it fresh!

Hello Prospects!  Challenge your mind without challenging your budget and discover if you are Mensa ready. Visit americanmensa.org/mht to get your Mensa Practice Test today.

Have you already taken an intelligence test?

Potential applicants can visit us.mensa.org/testscores to find out more, including which types of tests are accepted.

We give the test at the BP Energy Center campus, specifically in the Community Use Building. Please see the attached map for directions to the parking lot and the building. A sign at the check-in station, just inside the main doors, will indicate which room. We will have the room available to us by 5:00 pm, and the testing starts at 5:30 pm.

The fee is $60.00. We accept cash, money order, check, credit card, or a pre-paid voucher obtained through the National Office website, www.us.mensa.org. Please bring a copy of the voucher, if you choose that option, and a photo ID.

We are asking that you let us know if you will be joining us, and you can call or email one of us. Norma’s phone number is (907) 338-5950, and her email address is nlg@alaska.net. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Thank you for your interest.

Long Time Mensan Marie Lundstrom Earns Her Third Master's Degree!

Congratulations, Marie!  You have a new MFA to add to your list of degrees!  It shows we're never to old to learn something new, and it keeps us young trying!

We expect poems and stories for use on our website!

NEEDED: A Proctor for Fairbanks and the Alaska North!

Mensan Joe Nava has been a wonderful proctor in Fairbanks for more than a decade. We have no idea how many prospects he has tested, nor how many went on to join American Mensa, but it's got to be quite a few!  Thank you very much!!! Joe has let the Board know that he is ready to pass the position on to another member. This is a commitment of only about 2 hours a month, but is one of the most important positions one can hold in Mensa, because testing is the main source of new members. The alternative is to have prospects come down to Anchorage for testing.

To learn more about the position requirements and responsibilities, please visit the Proctor Page.

second Sunday potluck

posted Nov 24, 2016, 10:03 PM by Martin Oakes   [ updated Jan 7, 2018, 3:38 PM ]

Our second Sunday of the month summer potlucks have been extended through the winter, but definitely moved indoors.  Starts at 2:30 pm or whenever you can make it.  Conversation, eating, movies and games (in that order) have been our favorite activities in the past.  Winter evenings often see the fireplace brought into service.  You can bring a DVD or make a movie request in advance if you wish, or vote for games or talk instead.  All is flexible.  Fruit, cheese, olives, chips, dip, soft drinks, coffee, cocoa and some sort of dessert will normally be provided; sometimes also wine or a salad or a hot dish.  Bring a contribution if you wish, but don't stress, because there always seems to be enough food.  Come to 6614 Chevigny Street (take Raspberry westbound from Minnesota most of the way to Jewel Lake, turn right one block past Blackberry, 7th house on left).  Call Martin at 248-1250 with questions.

U.S. Mensa members may log on at www.us.mensa.org/profile , provide a valid email address, and choose whether to receive none or some or all of five periodic electronic publications from the national organization.  Expressing your preference for postal delivery of some items is also still possible.  If you choose to share your email address within American Mensa, you will give the Alaska group the opportunity to deliver your in-state newsletter electronically, which is preferred.

Alaska Mensa is fortunate enough to have proctors in the Anchorage area.  We have a need, however, for individuals willing to become proctors and administer Mensa tests to prospective members in Fairbanks and Southeast Alaska.  If you are interested in becoming a proctor, please contact Norma at 907-338-5950 or nlg@alaska.net .  Information about proctor qualifications and the application is also available on the national website - http://www.us.mensa.org .

Please join us for semi-monthly games night at Yak and Yeti, 1360 West Northern Lights Boulevard, 5:30 pm until 8:45 pm closing.  The first Saturday of each month will usually be Settlers of Catan while the third Saturday will be whatever other games are chosen by attendees.  Soups, salads, sandwiches, desserts and beverages are available from Yak and Yeti Cafe or Kaladi Brothers Coffee on premises.  Bring your favorite game or just show up prepared to play what others provide.  (Note - sometimes third Saturday will be moved to fourth Saturday to make room for movie night - be sure to check the calendar or call someone)
