The Alameda Vipers are based in Alameda, CA and welcome youth from the wider Bay Area to tryouts.  The Alameda Vipers Club is affiliated with the national Amateur Athletic Union and currently has teams from grades 3 to 12 for boys and girls.  The Alameda Vipers AAU Basketball Club operates year-round and separates the 12-month calendar into 3 seasons Winter/Spring (January-May), Summer (June-August) and Fall (September-December). Each season is made up of multiple practices per week and tournament and/or league play. Alameda Vipers is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 - one of only four non-profit AAU Basketball clubs registered in the State of California and at the Federal level. Alameda Vipers is an all-volunteer club made up of coaches, players and supporters who are members of the National AAU (Amateur Athletic Union).  While operating year-round, the goal of the Vipers organization is to create a foundation for our players to development their individual skills within the structure of team basketball. For additional information contact via email at or call 510-214-2601.

Summer 2014, the Alameda Vipers have the following teams for players entering grades as  of Sept. 1, 2013. Girls Divisions/Individual Teams (grades):   5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Boys Divisions/Individual Teams (grades): 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and Junior Varsity (HS), and Varsity (HS).

Depending on the formation of a new team or the roster needs of existing teams, the season may start with tryouts and evaluations of all players who are interested in being on the team.  While we understand and support multiple sports in youth athletics, the ability for each player and parent to commit to getting the players to practices, as well as the majority of the games scheduled during the season is key to the club’s goals and as well as showing unified commitment to the coaches and players on the team. The Alameda Vipers are continuously looking for kids to play AAU basketball if you are interested, please contact us to make an appointment for a tryout.

ABOUT AAU  Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest sports organizations in the United States. The difference between AAU basketball and other basketball leagues is based on the use of full high school rules. No developmental limitations are placed on the game such as participation and no-press/fast-break rules.  This promotes competitive play and the broadest exposure to fundamentals and advanced techniques of the game.

AAU is grade-based (exceptions apply) and the Vipers base our roster primarliy on grade-level.  For the 2013 Spring Season the grade is determined by what grade the student was in at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.

We are not a recreational team. The teams are composed of grades 3 through 12, separate Boys and Girls teams with players who love basketball and who want to develop their skills and understanding of the game. All emphasis will be on basic fundamental skills and team work. We emphasize development of the individual player within a team basketball structure.  The goal of each coach is that each player improves their game.

Every effort will be made to ensure players have an opportunity to demonstrate their basketball abilities during the tryout period and will be evaluated on skills such as ball handling, shooting, and passing along with demonstrating a positive attitude, work ethic, knowledge of the game and ongoing satisfactory academic performance. If a player does not make one of the teams, they are encouraged to continue to develop their abilities and try out again in the future.

Practices and Training

Teams will practice approximately 3 hours per week. Practices and Training program will be added after the team is established. Practice times are scheduled based upon availability of gyms, coaches and trainers.  Proper club attire at practices and games is required as determined by the coach. Playing time is determined by the coach to meet the competitive needs of the team and the games.  Playing times are not equal and it is the coach's discretion to put the best players in the game as the situation demands.

Alameda Vipers Club provides an opportunity for AAU Developmental Level basketball.  To remain competitive, players must meet the expectation of the coaches related to individual skills, mental preparedness, coach-ability (attitude, effort, ability to learn), and physical conditioning for the rigor of AAU games and practices.   In addition, players and parents must respect the coach and the coach’s decision and responsibility to the overall team and club.  A commitment to discipline in basketball training and conditioning during practice and outside of practice is required as well as reaching and maintaining the physical and mental conditioning and preparedness, and a commitment to team basketball.  Alameda Viper Head coaches have the right to add and remove players based the best outcome for the team.  Coaches are committed to working with players and parents through the course of the season.

Waivers, AAU Registration and Membership

All players parent or guardian must sign a waiver form to participate in tryouts. If selected to be on a team, players must immediately obtain an AAU “Added Benefits” membership card in order to participate in practices and game.  AAU membership runs annually currently September 1, 2013 through August 31, 2014.  In addition, the Alameda Vipers membership application packet must be completed at the first team meeting.

Fundraising and Sponsorship

Please ask for a “Sponsor Packet” if you know of someone or company that would be interested.  Alameda Vipers are a registered non-profit 501(c)3 organization and our tax identification number is 90-0679124.  All donations to the Alameda Vipers are fully tax deductible.

Games & Tournaments

Players are expected to commit to attending practices and games over the course of the season. Fees are based on the number of games that the team’s Head Coach wants for that season (minimum 12-15 games), and gym rentals fees, first aid, supplies and club insurance. All Alameda Vipers Coaches, and Managers and Board members are volunteers and are not paid for their valuable work with the club.

Most games and tournaments will be local (within the bay area) and some may occasionally be out-of-area (Sacramento, Reno, LA, etc.) and may require an overnight stay.  The Head Coach and Team Parent will select the appropriate number and location of tournaments. Once the game schedule is finalized, it is expected that players will attend all games and be ready to play.

The Alameda Vipers is a registered non-profit organization. We keep the fees for players very low.  We have modest uniforms and focus on teaching the game of team basketball.  Basketballs are provided. Each season the players fees are based on factors including gym rentals, insurance, game and tournament costs.  Checks for fees are made payable to: Alameda Vipers.

Traveling & Game Expenses:  All costs associated with travel to tournaments such as uniforms, transportation, parents and fan admission to games, food and hotel stay are the players family’s responsibilities and are not included in the seasonal fees.

Alameda Vipers Coaches are all volunteers. If you have AAU or scholastic coaching level experience and are interested in coaching opportunities. Please contact the club.

Background checks are required of all Coaches and Assistant Coaches. As of Sept. 1, 2012, the National AAU will conduct criminal background checks on every non-athlete member (Coaches, Managers, etc), and will not issue an AAU Membership card until the background check is "clear".
