Dr. Prasadd Ayyagari
(A.K.Prasada Rao)

Dr. A.K. Prasada Rao (Prasadd Ayyagari) a Mechanical Engineer with a PhD in Metallurgical and Materials Engg. from IIT-Kharagpur, is currently Professor at BML Munjal University (Hero Group).

Dr Rao is one of the few eminent Indian researchers, specialized in casting and solidification processing of light-weight alloys. Some of his earlier contributions include the development of technology for producing an Al-clad Mg-alloy strip through twin-roll casting, which inspired and attracted the attention of many other researchers. With his team at Brunel University, UK, he significantly contributed to the development of melt-conditioning in DC casting and successfully upscaled to SAPA aluminium (Sweden), now Norsk Hydro. As a part of this work, he worked with the University of Oxford, UK. He has authored around 60 articles in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings with over 700 citations and holds four patents. His research interests include solidification processing, un-diluted recycling of Aluminium; Artificial Intelligence, 3D-printing of metallic materials. Dr. Rao also serves as a reviewer for several research funding bodies of Malaysia, Czech Science Foundation, and Department of Science and Technology- India, and many reputed journals in his domain.

Developed a vertical type DC-casting pilot plant, which is capable of casting 80mm dia. X 1000mm long billets. Current research focuses on application of advanced techniques of liquid metal processing in DC casting of Aluminium and Magnesium alloys. An integrated Melt-conditioned Direct-Chill casting technology of producing Al-alloys and Mg-alloys has been developed. Billets thus produced possess fine-equiaxed grain structure with minimized macro-segregation, in the absence of any grain-refiner additions. This technology also provides ample scope for increasing Billet CASTING SPEED significantly.

     Job Profile    : 

Research work was dealt with studies on individual as well  as combined effects of grain refinement and modification on the microstructure of the hypo-eutectic Al-Si alloys. A novel master alloy, named as "MODIFINER" has been developed for the first time and its process of preparation has been  patented. MODIFINER treated Al-Si alloy results in simultaneous grain refinement and modification of the microstructure without adverse effects. Effect of various melt treatments prior to casting on the micro-structural  features of Al-Si alloys and its subsequent effect on the dry sliding wear behavior of Al-Si alloy has been studied and found that grain refinement and modification improve specific strength of the alloy. Attempt has been made to correlate the microstructure with the  wear and tensile behavior.

    Other Technologies Developed for Industry:


    Integrated Melt-conditioned Direct-Chill casting technology of producing Al-alloys and Mg-alloys has been developed. Billets thus produced possess fine-equiaxed grain structure with minimized macro-segregation, in the absence of any grain-refiner additions; through dendrite-fragmentation. Which also enables significant scope of increase in the casting speeds.

     

    Worked at University of Oxford ( http://www.begbroke.ox.ac.uk/_) and successfully upscaled the above technology for industry scale.
