A.J. Moore Academy began the Academy of Finance in the fall of 2001. Established in 1982, the Academy of Finance introduces students to the broad career opportunities in the financial services industry and, in the process, equips them to make sound choices for the future. A member program of the National Academy Foundation, the Academy of Finance operates as a "school within a school"; and is located in high schools nationwide. The program will provide a ninth through twelfth grade curriculum with opportunities to partner with community colleges, universities, and businesses.
For years, A.J. Moore Academy students have been preparing tax returns for people free of charge. Ron Smith, who founded the school’s tax preparation program, died July 28, 2010 after a battle with cancer.
“He’s going to be missed greatly. There’s nobody more the epitome of what A.J. Moore is all about,” A.J. Moore principal Angela Reiher said. Smith, 65, had been at A.J. Moore eight years and served as chair of the academy of finance.
Before teaching, he was the chief financial officer of a major corporation and had his own financial consulting firm. His travels and experiences were broad, Reiher said, and he brought those to the classroom. Smith was instrumental in starting a program that teamed A.J. Moore students with volunteers from Baylor University and NeighborWorks Waco, among others, to provide free tax preparation. “He’s the one that began it, and it’s going to go on in his name,” Reiher said.
To honor Mr. Smith, the academy he helped create will now bear his name - The Ron E. Smith Academy of Finance.
