The great questions that challenge our understanding of the global carbon cycle are: What are the basic oceanic mechanisms that control the oceanic carbon reservoirs and the partitioning of carbon between the ocean and the atmosphere? How do these mechanisms depend on the state of the climate system and how does the carbon cycle feed back to the climate? What is the current rate at which fossil fuel carbon dioxide is absorbed by the oceans and how might this change in the future? The 11 peer-reviewed chapters in this book, all written by acknowledged experts in their field, are all linked by the overarching questions. Many significant areas are touched on and the book provides the most up-to-date synthesis of the state-of-the-art research in ocean carbon cycle and climate related science.

All of a sudden, we are ?n a completely d?fferent part of Turkey
We found ourselves in a bit of a corner down there in Antakya, with the only escape routes being across the sea to Northern Cyprus, across the border to our dearly beloved Syria or travel north-east along a strip we knew well from five years ago. So, with very cheap flights from AnadoluJet, we skipped over to Ankara and then back east to Van, right up near the border with Iran. In a way, it did not feel right, to break up an organic trip like this, but the bus drive would have taken us probably 16 hours or so, and we were hear already before 10.30 in the morning, having spent yesterday evening at our favoured Cabaret Club drinking cold beers and listening to live Turkish rock music in old Antakya.

I took this photo in Ankara, Turkey in November 2008. Compared to all the other sights in Turkey, Ankara is just so-so but worth a few hours.
