Fray goes medium format
Another addition to the camera collection. Apart from my father's old Voigtlander ...which I've only ever used about twice... I've never had a medium format camera. When "viewing large", one is sometimes aware of the limitations of the 35mm system, and I've often fancied the idea of 120 film, with its larger negative. In my youth, the Bentos exchequer would not stretch to medium format and I got into the newly-popular 35mm habit. Now, everybody wants digital and, for the film fan ...as long as he doesn't mind secondhand equipment... it's a buyer's market. This pretty camera cost me ?26. It's a German camera, the Welta Weltax. If I've correctly understood the various online sources, they were first made in 1938, but following certain regrettable political events the company's equipment was confiscated and taken to the Soviet Union. Re-established after the war, the firm resumed production of the Weltax and, for many years, it was the only medium format folding camera ...apart from Soviet counterfeits of the Super Ikonta... available in the eastern bloc. Demand exceeded capacity and many cameras were assembled by Rheinmetall-Werk at Sommerda, not far from Weimar. Mine is one of these. The company was eventually swallowed by Pentacon. I thought of buying an Agfa Isolette (because Ian Krause used one), or a Zeiss Ikon, but, well, I liked the looks of the Weltax. All users seem to speak well of it. Mine has a Tempor shutter and Zeiss Tessar lens, one of several options available. I loaded it with a roll of Mrs B's out-of-date Kodak Tri-X and shot off half a dozen snaps around the locality. Of course, I omitted to wind on after the first shot. Unfortunately I won't get an opportunity to finish the roll until some time next week. My first impression was of the camera's compactness. It may be easily carried in one's jacket pocket. Focussing is judge-the-distance (in metres too), but I now have the use of Mrs B's Weston Master II exposure meter. This is so much fun.
Przemek (large format camera)
This is what happens when two guys try to test a new large format camera while: - being a bit drunk, - using a negative that had its best days more than 10 years ago, - being tired. Setting all the stuff up (lights, umbrellas and the dreadful large format) took us like 1,5 hour, then we took 2 shots (not only photos, shots of vodka as well) and developed it. The guy who sold the camera to Przemek gave him a box of old Ilford PAN 400 but he said this film expired like 10 years ago and told him to treat it as ISO 100. We exposed it like ISO 100 and developed like ISO 100... but apparently we should develop it like ISO 400 or at least much much longer since there was almost nothing at the negative sheets after we took them out of the development tank :((( Anyway... there was something and you can see it here. Well... Large format is fun :) Just setting it up is such a pain in the ass... let alone framing where everything is upside down :/... And well, I thought framing and focusing with my Seagull is pain... won't complain about it again ;) In the photo: my friend and proud owner of the large format Plaubel Peco Supra camera, Przemek Sorry for poor quality, we didnt have a flat negative scanner so we just took a photo of the messed up negative using a digital camera. Aahhh :)) I forgot to brat that I used a tilt in the camera for this one :))) First time in my life ;) Daamn, it's fun... such a pity I can't use it for street photography ;) Note to self: I have to start wearing glasses because I really have problems with focusing these days... maybe it's just general fatigue :/
