Widely used in the transport and construction industry. An air tarp is propelled by an air system. The initial cost of an air tarp is soon recovered in increased productivity. DOT [ Department of Transport ] has made it mandatory for some products to be tarp covered during transport. An example would be fine sand which can be blown off the transport unit at highway speed. An air tarp can also keep the container clean and dry while the unit is empty. This reduces possible contamination from environmental hazards such as rain or snow. Not only does it stop contamination but eases in the removal of the product being unloaded. Some materials bind to containers when exposed to water, snow or other debris.

An air tarp can reduce any chance that materials might fall off a unit during transport. Insurance claims for lost cargo can be very expensive and detrimental to a company image.
Safe transportation of materials is foremost in the general population interest. We all have friends or relatives that travel the roads and highways.

Workers have been injured, and in some cases loss of life has occurred after falling off a high load. With an air tarp the worker can easily cover their product to be transported. Saving time, money and increased productivity. Reduced employee injury and delivery of clean products can make the difference in whether a company can win a contract or job transporting a customers products.

Many different designs and products have been engineered to meet specific load covering needs. Some early models were pron to malfunction. Current systems are in place that rarely give operators problems. When purchasing an air tarp product, it is good advice to ask for a demonstration of the product. Or confer with a company that is already using the system for feedback.

Price and availability of parts are also things to consider when making your purchase. Damage could be done to an air tarp if involved in an accident or unforeseen incident. A good supplier should guarantee their product defect free under normal use. Length of guarantee may differ from different manufacturers. Consult the company before purchase about your needs and products to be covered. Some products could have an adverse effect on the longevity of material being used for the air tarp.

Push button controls for an air tarp can be cab operated or remotely mounted on trailers. Depending on the application dictates the best operator position for using the air tarp. Some units do not need a truck for operation. As long as a air supply is present, they can function. A portable air supply could also charge a system with air so the air tarp could be used. For example if trailers were parked and the owner wanted to keep their containers dry and clean. Some products work with both electrical and air supply so this should be noted when purchasing an air tarp.

An air tarp is sometimes used to describe fabric and nylon roof structures. Modern engineering and technology has allowed the manufacturing of special tarps that can span large areas. Certain designs are retractable allowing the opening or covering of a large sports arena. They have also been used in some international airport terminals and other recent projects globally.

Suitcase covers and cargo protectors are also sometimes referred to as an "air tarp".  Air craft engine covers and various other applications render the use of an air tarp for protection.
