24:365 Getting ready for a night out in Manchester
Jan 16th 2009 Spent the morning and afternoon in Manchester with mum. Had to go and have a root canal done and then we pottered around the shops. This evening Paul and I headed out into Manchester city centre with Andy and Sara. Paul and Andy had been watching Man Utd thrash Burnley 3-0 and headed into town from Old Trafford via the tram. Sara and I caught the train in and joined then at Waxy O'Connors Irish pub. I had umm-ed and ahh-ed about what to wear because I wasn't sure of the evening's plans and it was cold outside. Eventually settled on a purple top I'd got in the Oasis sale earlier in the day and a lacy vest thing to go under which I got from Primarni (Primark for those un-initiated in the lingo). After a quick drink in Waxy O'Connors we headed to La Vina for Tapas. We were told there was an hours wait on the table but we were seated in 20 mins. Unfortunately there were long waits between courses and they screwed up the desserts by dropping Sara's lime mouse on the floor. They said they could make another but Sara and Andy opted out of desserts and consequently we got 25% discount on the meal in order to re-pay us for the wait. Then it was a case of choosing somewhere to go to before the last train back. Paul suggested Mojo's which he'd been to before. Andy and Sara weren't too impressed and felt the crowd was too young (there were other people there in their 30s but they were fewer in number). They played music which dated anything from 1960s onwards - rock and guitar band type of stuff. My tooth was nagging me a bit (and I was worried about drinking on the concotion of 5 drugs I'd taken that day) so I didn't really relax into it until the end (when we had to catch the train). Felt sorry for Paul because I think he thought we all hated it and he'd made a mistake - he hadn't. But news from Facebook is that Andy and Sara are up for more nights in town so it can't all have been bad. We'd ordered a taxi from the station to take us back and lo-and-behold it didn't turn up. We waited and waited in the cold and eventually gave up and began to walk. I was less than impressed - I had thin soled ballet shoes on and my feet were freezing and my shoes weren't especially comfortable. 10 mins into the walk home the night bus passed us and we got on. What should've been a ?4 taxi fare between us turned out to be a ?7.20 bus fare between us. Something slightly wrong in the logic there me thinks. Anyhow we got home safely, warmed us and went to bed knowing a lie-in was in order the next day!

"Back in the day," on breaks from Ohio University, my hometown friends and I would load up a car and head up I-75 to Bowling Green, Ohio on Tuesdays and Fridays. Alternative Dance Night (back when Alternative reallymeant something)at Uptown/downtown.
We'd shoot Slippery Nipples and chug Rolling Rocks till closing and sometimes hit the diner across the street for slurred fries and burgers.
Ah, the Punk and Goth BGSU ladies, how I loved you all.
They gave this shirt away on the night of their fundraising for Stop AIDS Now benefit.
