Trajectory - A Remote Memory
I always wanted to be a pilot some day. As a kid I used to draw F-15s and Sukhois in my school books. I collected books with photographs 'Worlds Best Fighter Aircraft' .... and the likes of such. I wanted to get deeper in to it. So one day, my uncle decides to give me his 'How things Work' set of manuals (each one was over 400 pages). The book was old, the pages had gone a dark ivory in colour and the text was even more prominent..... like silouhettes in a sepia photograph..... I read parts of the book that interested me, namely the chapters on flight and its principles. I was for the first time 'eager to learn'. It would be a big deal if I understood a method or a formula considering I was only 15 at the time. But what pleased me the most was making sense of the illustrations ...... with its countless alphabetical values and lines with arcs. Getting to the right hand side of the page would mean I'd have either done it right, or thought did it right. I loved it. I always tried to visually imagine beyond the illustration..... a picture of what it be like in real life and because I was never exposed to shots like this when I was a kid or Photoshop for that matter, it was a very grainy, silouhetted image of the mind. I saw this shot today at about two in the afternoon, the sky was blue and the clouds were less pronounced... or aged in this case. The aircraft above had left a trail spanning the picture, leaving the aircraft below almost in parallels. I guess it would make a good ad campaign for the newer generations of enviro-friendly airplanes. It was a flashback for me, to the time when I was 15 today at 25. I was in my bedroom (as I was today) and was reading this awesome book on flight .... and I imagined its representations to be like this. Oh, view it large...
Road trip essential
Moon pies have been part of my family's road trips in the south east as long as I can remember. Being the only part of our extended family to live in California (which is no longer the case, but I digress) we spent most of our Christmas Eves and Christmas Days on planes or in automobiles en route to Mississippi or South Carolina. My parents being the, ahem, frugal people that they are, we rarely flew into the nearest airport. If the best deal was to Atlanta, we drove the three hours (after a six hour flight, mind you) to our destination. Not much is open on Christmas Day, so there were a lot of Christmas meals eaten at gas stations and rest stops. To protest the utter stupidity (in my teenage opinion) of being at a rest stop on Christmas Day instead of back in California, I would make snippy comments about our trashiness and get some pretzels. I think I thought being hungry in an hour when the rest of my family was satiated made me feel like more of a martyr. (I could be quite a pain when I chose to be) Anyway, my sister and my father were much smarter. On top of Cheeto Puffs (never just plain Cheetos), M&M peanuts, and soda, they always stocked up on Moon Pies. They weren't all that easy to find in California, so they stocked up when they could. Amazingly, I hadn't tried one until the road trip my sister and I took across the country in October 2006. I was missing out on some awesome road trip food and never even knew it.
