New Look; New Year
New Look; New Year
Happy New Year to everyone! I've been working on a sewing job, and dealing with some family stuff, so time has been tight for a few weeks. Hopefully, I'll be able to spend a little time on here this week. About three weeks ago, my water heater went out. I was shocked to discover that the prices of new water heaters had pretty much doubled since my last one was put in, and so I've been saving to buy another. Meanwhile, it's been like a third world country around my house, as I have to boil water for dishes, and have to run over to a friend's boathouse to wash my hair and shower! Tonight, I had the yucky task of bleaching my roots and dying my hair, which takes about 2 1/2 hours. Thank God my friends, Sarah and George, who live at a marina on a boat downtown, have allowed me to use the shower in the boathouse, because it's been easier for me to get there than over to my brother's house. However, when I did my hair tonight, it took really dark, and greyish, which doesn't show in the photo. Normally, if I were home, I'd hop in the car, go to CVS, and pick up a bottle of a warmer color blonde to perk it up. Since I didn't have a shower to use here, though, that wasn't an option. So, I'll just have to make due with funky hair for a few days until I can get back over there, or (hopefully) manage to get my own water heater! You don't realize how much of a blessing conveniences like hot tap water are until you don't have them. Boy, am I looking forward to being able to stay in my own house and bathe! In a way, I was glad my hair came out a little darker. It gave me a chance to think about going back to having dark hair, which I've been resisting, but which would be more affordable for me. I love being blonde, but it is a major pain in the neck, not to mention more expensive and time consuming! Lately, I've been starting to miss being a brunette. (Well, sort of.) :-) The change is coming, I suppose, but I don't know if I'm ready for it yet. It's just as hard to keep this color as it is the lighter blonde, so it's going to be a lot darker if I stop the bleaching. Another thing I've been struggling with is making a decision to keep or sell my home. As many of you know, I've been having some huge financial problems for some time now, and am about to be 2 years behind in paying my property tax. (They take your house after the third year!) No matter how hard I've worked, I can't seem to come up with the large chunks of money it will take to pay what I owe- which will be about $4000 this Spring. So, having heard that there was a program to assist with people who are in the same boat as me, I went to city hall and inquired. It ended up being a wild goose chase, and despite a very kind lady named Janet helping by making a phone call to see if she could point me in the right direction, no one knew of the program my friend told me about, and I left feeling really bummed out, and rather like a beggar. So, after dying my hair, Sarah, George, and I went downtown to a local coffee house called Sweet Marley's to relax. They've been trying to convince me to purchase a boat, and since it might be way more affordable than a house at this point, I'm seriously considering it. There seems to be only two opinions when it comes to living on a boat. Either people think you're nuts, and impractical, or they think it's totally cool! Frankly, I prefer to stay where I am, but I'd rather live on a boat than be homeless! It's looking more and more like that will be one of my only options. There's a lot of other stuff going on right now, too, which has had me pulled in several directions. What a start to a new year! 2011 will be a tough one, I believe, but I see it as a turning point. Hopefully, it will be a turn for the better. In the meantime, I'll be back to posting a bunch of stuff that I need to get off my computer! So, I'll be doing that for a few weeks. It's good to be back. This pic was edited in Picasa, and retouched using Portrait Professional. I then threw it into Photo Explosion for airbrushing. The original is below.

13/365 - Bright!
January 14th, 2009 I went to went to my great grandmothers funeral today. It was a lovely service. She looked at peace in the casket. I was looking at her and I felt this warm calm come over me. I too felt at peace. Today's service made me think about life and death and what our purpose is here on earth. I think our purpose here is to serve. I was so cold at work today. I was standing in the checkout all night with a vent above my head blowing cold air constantly. I had my fleece on and I was still cold! I asked my manager if the company can buy a space heater and she said no because work can't afford it. I was thinking that I could buy a heater and put it up in the checkout and take it back to my locker at the end of my shift. I think she might say no. I don't know. It is supposed to get down to 20F below zero tonight. It's the coldest night since 2004. After work I filled up a cup with hot water and brought it outside and threw the water up in the air. It all didn't evaporate but some did. I never tried that before. It was kind of cool. Tomorrow night it's supposed to be like today. COLD! Well, I think that's about it for now.
