Ice Bound Tug
Ice Bound Tug
This is a re-work of a picture I posted last year, but I think this one is a little more natural looking, and less overdone. I'm pretty busy today, so If I don't get by your streams, have a great weekend!!! ------THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE------ *It's a long story, so if you're busy, you can skip this nonsense....... I had heard rumors of this tug boat that was ice bound up river, and was going to be stuck there for the winter. Thinking it would make a great photo, I decided to embark on a journey to find it. As this area of the river is inaccessible by vehicle, and a long trek through the wilderness, I knew it wouldn’t be easy. This would take more than my highly adept skills and natural charm. I was going to need a guide. For years I’ve heard tales of an old Yupik guy who lived on the outskirts of town, and would offer guide, and sled dog services, for a small fee. I had even heard that he lived in an igloo, but I didn’t believe that one. We do have warm summers after all. From all that I had heard, he sounded like just the guy I needed. Making my way to the outer edges of town, to where it’s quite forested, I started asking around, and was finally directed to a small cabin set back in the woods. The cabin welcomed me on this cold and chilly day with a friendly plume of smoke rising from the fireplace chimney. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I knocked on the door. Lots of odd tales, along with his name (Pea Brake Mudluck) preceded my visit, and I was a little apprehensive. I heard noises from within, and the scraping of a chair on a wooden floor. Then the door slowly opened, and I was face to face with Mr. Mudluck. I had heard the term rheumy eyed before, but didn’t really know what it meant until I met Pea Brake. His left eye was a blue/green kind of color, and certainly rheumy. His right eye (the brown one) seemed to stare off as if it had a mind of its own. I was trying to decide which one to focus on when he slipped an eye patch out of his pocket, and slapped it over the brown one. As his fingers worked among his mangy hair to tie the eye patch in place, I explained why I was there. He asked me to come in, and I as entered I noticed it was warm and cozy, with the only light coming from the fireplace, and an old lantern hanging over the table. We sat down at a table in front of the fireplace. He worked on his breakfast while I explained in more detail. As I finished talking a small door opened and a dark eyed beauty stepped into the room. Legend had it that Pea Brake had rescued a Persian Princess on one of his many adventures, and married her. Until now I had not believed it. As she made her way across the room, I was transfixed by her every movement. Approaching the table, she swiftly slapped Pea Brake in the back of the head, and told him to chew with his mouth closed. Although I had a small amount of empathy for the poor guy, I was thinking that any man would be lucky to be head slapped by this exotic woman every day for the rest of his life. After finishing his meal (with mouth firmly shut), Pea Brake told me he’d be glad to guide me on this journey, but with three demands. In addition to cash, he wanted a fifth of rum, a case of Lutefisk, and a cask o’ whale oil for his lantern. As I agreed to his terms I couldn’t help but wonder where in the world I could possibly find something as rare as a fifth of rum. With our business terms concluded, he led me outside to the pen where he kept the sled dogs. As he opened the pen and the dogs began to enter the yard, I was struck by the beauty of the first few huskies. I have never seen four more beautiful dogs anywhere. Regal, and strong looking, they frolicked about in the cold snowy weather. They were quickly followed by three Cocker Spaniels, two Yorkies, and a Chihuahua. “Uh……..” I started to say. I glanced at Pea Brake and his expression seemed to dare me to comment on his sled team. I smiled at him. “Nice dogs!” As we walked over to the dog sled, I couldn’t help but notice the odd brake that he had on his sled. He told me it was his own invention, and that it has become very popular among sled dog enthusiasts. It was carved from wood; about 3 feet long, and had 3 odd bumps along its length. Upon close examination, it occurred to me that it looked like a giant pea pod. Then the light bulb went on. “Hey!” I exclaimed. “That’s why they call you “Pea Brake”!” Smiling, he nodded. I continued, “I thought they called you that because you stopped too often on the trail, after drinking lots of coffee.” He looked at me quizzically, not getting the joke. Then he shook his head as if to clear it, and motioned for me to sit on the sled. He then wrapped me in bundles of furs, and tied them close. I realized I couldn’t move anything, except my head. Even the lead dog, the Chihuahua, straining under the weight of the harness, didn’t look as ridiculous as I felt, all wrapped up like an Indian maiden’s papoose. Pea Brake made a final tug on the bindings
