WHATMAN FILTER PAPER SIZES. LENS FILTER POUCH
Whatman 1949 Mould Made Ledger Paper
Countermark from a sheet of ledger paper, mould machine-made at Springfield Mill by W & R Balston Ltd, in 1949. This piece cut to 10?" x 9" and previously kept-back as a mill reference sample, though it had already been supplied to customer (hence the ledger ruling). Two annoying ring-binder punch holes the only defect (that and not having the full-size sheet that this piece was taken from!). Not as thick as the earlier hand-made examples, nor yet as heavily sized. Plus, they have dropped the 'HAND MADE' from the countermark. At about this period Balston's were more dependent on their filter papers and drawing and writing papers, with ledger papers coming in fourth, though still a fairly large part of their business. Ledger papers were made more and more on their mould-machines (2 by that time), and this piece has a completely different 'feel' to it, compared to the others. Nice piece of paper though, in all fairness.Paper Crane!
Thanks to DQ for teaching me how! Note the first attempt of a crane is on my head.
