  • In photography and optics, a neutral density filter or ND filter can be a colorless (clear) or grey filter. An ideal neutral density filter reduces and/or modifies intensity of all wavelengths or colors of light equally, giving no changes in hue of color rendition.
  • (ND Filters) Neutral Density filters can be attached to the lens of a camera to assist in preventing overexposure of an image. Prosumer camcorders have ND filters built in.
  • A filter that attenuates light evenly over the visible light spectrum. It reduces the light entering a lens, thus forcing the iris to open to its maximum.

  • A movie or other piece of material recorded on videotape
  • the visible part of a television transmission; "they could still receive the sound but the picture was gone"
  • (computer science) the appearance of text and graphics on a video display
  • A videocassette
  • video recording: a recording of both the visual and audible components (especially one containing a recording of a movie or television program)
  • The system of recording, reproducing, or broadcasting moving visual images on or from videotape

These filters reduce the amount of light passing through the camera lens without changing the color of the scene. They are especially useful in bright light conditions to help prevent overexposure. Neutral Density filters also allow proper exposure at a wider lens opening for reduced depth-of-field to highlight a key subject by making the foreground and/or background out of focus.

A slower shutter speed can be used to produce blurred motion effects.

Welding mask glass used as ND filter - vetro per maschera da saldatura usato come filtro ND
A couple of days ago I bought a welding mask glass (2.60 euro) labeled "Protane 11 SQ 1 DIN 0196". The size of the glass is 100 ? 75 mm, 2.7 mm thick. This is a compared shot: the exposure speed goes from 1/800" in aperture priority to 20 seconds. I leave as an exercise to the reader to calculate how many EV are cut by the filter. For who don't see a practical use of this, think that you can take photos of the monuments without tourists...

I worked on a 30 second TV spot concept this past weekend and borrowed a friend's Glidetrack to use on my camera for one of the scenes. I put it on the ground and shot wide at 16mm. Beautiful & fluid. Loved it. Seen here: Canon 1D Mark IV EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM + hood 82mm Singh Ray Vari-ND filter Glidetrack

This Neutral Density filter reduces intensity of all wavelengths or colors of light equally, giving no changes in hue or color rendition. The purpose of standard photographic neutral density filters is to allow the photographer greater flexibility to change the aperture, exposure time and/or blur of subject in different situations and atmospheric conditions. Instead of reducing the aperture to limit light, the photographer can add a ND filter to limit light, and can then set the shutter speed according to the particular motion desired and the aperture set as needed.Neutral Density filters have a four main uses: 1) To enable slow shutter speeds to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, and cars. 2) To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used. This helps separate subjects from their background. 3) To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations. 4)To allow cine and video cameras to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes that would normally cause over-exposure. Some examples of when to use an ND filter include: 1) Blurring water motion (e.g. waterfalls, rivers, oceans). 2) Reducing depth of field in very bright light (i.e. daylight). 3) When using a flash on a camera with a focal-plane shutter, exposure time is limited to the maximum speed (often 1/250th of a second, at best) at which the entire film or sensor is exposed to light at one instant. Without an ND filter this can result in the need to use f8 or higher. 4) Using a wider aperture to stay below the diffraction limit. 5) Reduce the visibility of moving objects. 6) Add motion blur to subjects. The number on the filter you need will depend on the thread size of your lens. For example, the kit lens which comes with the Canon Rebel XT is 58mm, so you would need a 58mm filter.
