Fast & Easy Replacement

In arid climates or the cold, dry days of winter, owning a humidifier makes an awful lot of sense. A humidifier protects household occupants from static electricity shocks, prevents dry, itchy skin, allows stressed lungs to breathe with more comfort, and infuses the room's environment with needed moisture to furniture, fabrics, and plants for long-lasting health. But for all of these positive attributes, using a humidifier may also produce some nasty and harmful results. If not properly cared for, a humidifier becomes the breeding ground for assorted viruses, bacteria, mildew, and mold. In other words, the soothing moist air exhaled by humidifier might be much more harmful than helpful in the long run. To keep the air clean and amply humidified, it is essential to regularly replace the humidifier's filter, where the impurities often fester. Hamilton Beach recognizes the importance of clean filters by offering this replacement filter from their True Air line.
The filter fits Cool Mist models 05520 and 05521. These humidifiers accommodate rooms up to 1200 square feet and feature a 4-gallon output per tank. The filter drops into the tank for simple installation. Filters should be replaced every three months and humidifier water changed weekly to ensure clean breathing air. The Cool Mist humidifiers are also dishwasher- safe for thorough, regular cleaning. To extend the filter's life, some users swap out filters weekly to allow the spare filter to dry well to keep mold from developing. Rotating the filter also may prolong its life. No warranty is available for the replacement filter. This item measures 11.1 by 6.8 by 3.1 inches. --Jessica Reuling

Headquarters Building. Abandoned Mount Laguna Air Force Station

Nature is taking over. The cool blue lighting effect in the windows was created by using a handheld flash and colored gel filters. The red glow inside the vent hood was achieved using a LED head lamp. The camera was set up on a tripod and the shutter was kept open for a couple of minutes while I walked around inside the building and fired the flash. Mount Laguna Air Force Station is located atop Mount Laguna, with a steep drop into the Anza Borrego desert. It was a DEW (Distant Early Warning) site, watching for incoming aerial, and housed about 170 people until it was downsized in 1981. Now it is a multi-use satellite and radar communications site, operated primarily by the FAA, out of Los Angeles Center. Beginning in 1952, the Mt. Laguna Air Force Station was home to the 751st Aircraft Control and Warning (AC&W) Squadron, later the 751st Radar Squadron, part of the Air Defense Command. More info here: heshone.com/wordpress/?p=77 The base has been abandoned since the mid 1980's and will soon be demolished. The U.S. Forest Service - current owner of this land - is in the process of demolishing these buildings using $10,000,000 in federal stimulus funds. Demolishing the radar towers, cooling plant, power generation plant, and other structures at the upper base will require an additional $5,000,000 -- which the USFS doesn't have - so a big chain link fence has been erected around the upper base -- including the upper scenic overlook when one can see the Anza-Borrego Desert. The lower overlook isn't fenced, however. Use caution exploring the buildings at the lower base as this area is now frequently patrolled.
