This is the scene FIVE HOURS after our take-off time from SYD to LAX. The Qantas computer system deleted everyone's records, so the entire jet of passengers had to be manually re-entered (I waited 2.5 hours just to check my suitcase). Then, when most of us had boarded, the new records were re-deleted. So, most of us sat in our seats on the plane for 5 hours, and not because there was anything was wrong with the plane. Then, they had to retrieve baggage from the hold for passengers who got off the plane and gave up on flying that day, which took another half hour. The Qantas staff were very unhelpful and uninformative throughout the whole thing, especially when we reached LAX after our 15 hours of flying and almost everyone needed to be re-booked for ongoing flights we had missed. They had one, single ground staff member available to re-direct about 300 passengers. Pathetic. It was a terrible way to end a wonderful vacation.
If it runs out of gas, we'll just stop and get more. Now quit fueling around and let's get going.

There is a clue in this photo, a clue that tells why we're still in the terminal watching our luggage sitting out on the tarmac and not trundling up the luggage ramp like its supposed to be; a clue to why it's getting darker out and we're still in Baltimore, swapping Anne Tyler lines and trying to remember the names of all the characters on the series "Homicide" (set in Baltimore, natch) and what they're doing now (G's son? Drug lord on "Breaking Bad". Pembleton? Chevy lord on "Men of a Certain Age". Det. Laura Ballard? Tried to set Tommy Gavin on fire in "Rescue Me". Were we bored? You bet.) The clue is down there under the plane. I named the clue "Bubba" because when he clumb down off the ladder, out from the bowels of the plane, he looked like a Bubba. And I had to take it out on somebody.
