Local news on the flight
The flight was painless?-- 7 hours, but somehow it flew by. Could have been the two movies I watched (the hangover --eh.. I just can'tget into the implausible dude film -- and walk the line ). Did not sleep one wink. Dinner was chicken with mushrooms -- not bad. The wine helped. In Helsinki, I had to wait 5 hours for my connecting flight to Tallinn (flight to Tallinn was 250 dollars cheaper than direct to Helsinki, go figure.) Luckily, I had run into a colleague who was attending a related meeting to what I was in Finland for -- and her hotel was the airport Hilton, which is.. connected to the airport. She let me take a nap in her room BLESS HER, though it only lasted 1.5 hours since we had to wait around a while for check-in. Still, much needed and much appreciated. Then it was a flight to Tallinn on a little puddle jumper. In Tallinn, I had to take a ferry back to Helsinki. I knew there was a 3pm ferry, but my flight only landed at 2.10 pm. No way I would make it. Well, I DID. VICTORY! Good news - it was the fast ferry, which meant it took 90 minutes to get back to Helsinki! Bad news -- It was ROCKY and I almost got very sick. Near the end of the ride, I pulled out a plastic Gristedes bag in preparation for illness. Good news -- I DID NOT GET SICK! and that,s where the bad news ends. I got into Helsinki, walked to my hotel, and was done with my crazy travel day. RELIEF.
So, after I landed in Helsinki, I had to wait five hours for a flight to Tallinn. In Tallinn, I had to hightail it to the ferry terminal to catch a 90 minute ferry BACK to Helsinki. This all saved me $250. It was $250 cheaper to add on an extra flight to Tallinn than to just stay in Helsinki. Thanks, Finnair. While it caused me some hassles, I don't regret it. It was its own small adventure. I grabbed a cab from the airport which was great -- it was cheap and fast and the guy did not try to rip me off, and while the fast ferry rules SAID you had to buy your ticket at least one hour in advance, they let me buy a ticket 10 minutes ahead and I was on my way. Such sweet, sweet relief. Only problem with the FAST ferry was that it was very, very rocky. I very nearly got seasick, which felt embarrassing since no one else seemed to be as bothered. Luckily I was able to get off the ferry without having been sick. Hurrah!! So many small victories so soon in the trip.
