Includes FREE planning and background information. Manila is an intriguing travel destination. As with most capital cities, Manila is not only the seat of the national government, it’s also the main exporter of the country’s cultural capital. As a result, there’s quite a lot to learn here: some good, and some not so good. You’ll need to dig fairly deep underneath the surface, however, because this isn’t the sort of city where a huge infusion of tourist spending has led to a particularly impressive tourism infrastructure. In fact, something you may notice as you go about your day in the city’s less visited yet still approachable neighbourhoods, such as Quiapo or Pasay City, is just how uninterested in you the locals appear to be. In the tourist enclaves of Intramuros and Malate, of course, where the hucksters and streetwalkers ply their trade, the exact opposite will prove true. But if you’re a traveller who likes to get a feel for the pulse of a place just before the rest of the world storms in, it’s quite likely that Manila may just be the sort of town you’ve been looking for.

Leaving Manila International Airport at this time of day can sometimes lead to delays(not on the gates but on the runways) as the landing and takeoff sequence is longer than usual. The plane on the runway is Air Philippines flight PR 989 just gathering speed for takeoff, bound for Iloilo City. Getting ready to position on the runway(near the far end of the runway) is Philippine Airlines flight PR503, bound for Singapore onwards to Jakarta. Trailing PR503, is Air Philippines flight PR 925 bound for Davao City. About to follow PR 925, is Northwest Airlines flight NW 20, headed for Narita, Tokyo. A bit behind is Cebu Pacific flight 5J 383, leavig for Cagayan de Oro. Near the right quadrant of the image is a Boeing 747-400, just leaving the gate, this is Philippine Airlines flight PR300 heading for Hongkong. At its final boarding phase at the international terminal I, is Singapore Airlines flight SQ 915 bound for Singapore, and China Southern flight CZ 378 bound for Beijing. Sometimes, you get to know all these information if the control tower communication regularly plays in your ears. Sometimes, you get to know them, if you are at the airport at this time of the day, and frequently. Sometimes, you just get to know the schedules -- if you read a lot of stuff AND use your common sense. As for the aircraft I'm on -- that's for you to think about. Let's just say, sometimes, I like guessing games. hahahaha.

This is a panoramic view photograph taken from on top of the Manila Hotel, Manila Philippines. Left to right: Manila City Hall, Old Spanish Wall of Intramuros, Legazpi-Urdaneta Monument, destroyed Tranvia cars, Legislative Building, Bureau of Finance Building, Padre Burgos Street. The photograph has a date of 1947 on it. If you notice it is crude writing compared to the other writing so it must have been put on at a later date. I wonder if the date is correct. Was there really this much damage still showing in 1947? I scanned and uploaded this photograph once before but this is a better, wider scan than the earlier one. The photograph is wider than my scanner will accept. For this scan I scanned one side then the other and stitched the two together.
