Disney World on Her Mind
Disney World on Her Mind
Northwest Houston resident and blood donor Krystal Pierre is the proud winner of a pair of airline tickets to anywhere Continental Airlines flies in the contiguous United States. She was randomly selected as the first winner in the “Save Lives and See the World” promotion by Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, which is selecting a new prize recipient every two weeks during October and November. Thanks to the promotion, a trip to Disney World may be in the works for Pierre and her husband. A lifelong blood donor, she first gave blood at age 17 during a blood drive at her high school. Today Pierre is a Commit for Life member donating once per quarter at Shriners Hospital, where she works in Management Information Systems as a clinical analyst. “God gave me this blood, so I could give it to others,” says Pierre. “If I’m healthy, I think I should donate.” Because she has type-O blood, Pierre is a universal donor. That means her blood can be transfused to patients of other blood types. Hospitals rely on type-O blood during emergency situations when there is not enough time to determine a patient’s blood type.
World Trade Center PATH Station
World Trade Center PATH Station
I am overnighting in New York City on this day - my first and only return to New York City in the 21st Century, after having called it home until 1998. As soon as I entered Manhattan, I knew I had to come here, to Ground Zero. I still had fresh memories of visiting the World Trade Center complex during the 1990s, so its destruction was still difficult to believe. Its underground shopping mall was one of my favorite hangouts, the rooftop observatory of the South Tower was my favorite vantage point for city views, and the North Tower lobby had airline ticketing offices where I priced tickets to Los Angeles on United Airlines, often ending up on the very aircraft that ended up slamming into the South Tower on September 11th, 2001. In August 2004, at least some normalcy was returning. World Trade Center had its own PATH subway station for services to New Jersey, and it was operational again.
