Man With Moustache, Carte De Viste, Davenport, Iowa
Allegedly, beautiful women, really beautiful women, drop-down-on-your-knees-and-pray,-that-good-looking women, have a harder row to hoe in life than other, perhaps somewhat-less-favored members of the fair sex. mrwaterslide wouldn't know about that. He wouldn't even be able to tell you if really handsome men suffer a similar fate, not being one of those either. Oh, he's handsome enough, he supposes. But really, really handsome, no. He worked with a guy in North Charleston, South Carolina once who was that handsome. Not mature, this fellow, not grown-up, not really manly, but lean and good-looking in a twangy country way that the girls, for some reason, couldn't resist. Once, at a big function (we mean BIG---it was a sitdown dinner for 4500 people), this fellow (we'll call him Dave, having forgotten his name) was handing out something, towels, water pitchers, salt shakers, to a long line of servers, young college girls. mrwaterslide was standing there watching, probably avoiding work as much as possible, as is his usual practice. Anyway, this one girl came up to the front of the line and Dave pushed her salt shakers over to her and didn't look up. She just stood there, not moving on, one beat, two beats, three beats, waiting, and finally Dave looked up and she caught his eye (that was all she was ever going to get from him, but, apparently, that was enough) and then she moved on. That's the kind of handsome we're talking about, the kind that makes people start, catch their breath, blush, stumble over their words, forget what they were going to say. This fellow is that handsome. Can't remember where I bought this little cdv (carte de viste), somewhat larger than a business card. The subject is unidentified, but the photograph was taken by J.M. Lenz in Davenport, Iowa (there you go, another Iowa photo). It has a rather elaborate backmark, which (along with its clarity, the close-up nature of the photograph, and the clothing style) indicates that it is later, probably 1870's (mrwaterslide's somewhat educated guess). mrwaterslide doesn't really look for photographs of handsome men, but if a a photo is good enough, especially if it's marked $2 or $3, he'll buy it. $5 is a pretty general price for a decent cdv. Regardless, the other reason (most likely, as the truth is fogged in by time) that mrwaterslide bought this photograph is because this fellow looks like someone whom mrwaterslide used to know. We'll call him Trampas. Trampas was a journeyman cook, living in a flea-bitten three-horse burg we'll call Poison Springs, in a state we'll call Misery. Where mrwaterslide first worked with Trampas he can't rightly remember (he can't rightly remember a whole lot, though, looking back, some of the bad times stick up out of the water, like burning garbage scows, and a few of the good times (yes, there were some) beacon from afar, like Mauna Loas, translucent in the morning light. It might have been that they (mrwaterslide and Trampas) first worked at a mid-scale casual family restaurant called Justin's. The owner of Justin's named the restaurant after one of his kids, and mrwaterslide has always wondered what the reaction was when he told the kid the restaurant had gone bankrupt. Trampas was maybe not quite as good-looking as the fellow in this photograph. This guy looks dominant, total alpha dog. He looks like he's over six feet tall, with that high brow and those piercing eyes, and the moustache that is just right, not too much, not too little, not flashy or flamboyant. Manly. Okay, Trampas was maybe 5'9", 5'10" and maybe a little stocky. But he was handsome enough, and he had that male swagger about him. Cooking was easy for him (mrwaterslide makes it look hard); he could peel a tenderloin and turn out three eggs, over-easy, without breaking the yolks (as an aside, the sorry *!~U%*&%^ breakfast cook at the Early Girl Eatery in Asheville, North Carolina can not cook three eggs over easy, and get it right, to save his neck, and the cashier is a loud, overbearing, smells bad walrusette of the first order). Trampas had a girlfriend (we'll call her Helga) and they'd been together for a number of years. She was a blonde bartender in pigtails, with a kind of Austrian dirndlesque swagger all her own, and she and Trampas made a good pair. So mrwaterslide knows this couple and then he loses track of them, and then he takes a new job at another new establishment, a quote/unquote Country Club quote/unquote that was soon to open on the western edge of the expanding burg that was the foul sump known as Poison Springs, Misery. Well. it was a crazy place at a crazy time, and a lot of crazy stuff went on, but that's not our story. Here's our story: one day Trampas and mrwaterslide are in the kitchen of this "Country Club" clubhouse, doing some prep work, getting ready for the evening rush. mrwaterslide always tries to create conditions where people will tell h
Himalayan Brown Bear
Himalayan Brown Bear
The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a large bear distributed across much of northern Eurasia and North America. It can weigh from 300 to 780 kilograms (660 to 1720 lbs) and its largest subspecies, the Kodiak Bear, rivals the polar bear as the largest member of the bear family[2] and as the largest land-based predator.[3] There are several recognized subspecies within the brown bear species. In North America, two types are generally recognized, the coastal brown bear and the inland grizzly, and the two types could broadly define all brown bear subspecies. Grizzlies weigh as little as 350 lb (159 kg) in Yukon, while a brown bear, living on a steady, nutritious diet of spawning salmon, from Coastal Alaska and Russia can weigh 1500 lb (682 kg). The exact number of overall brown subspecies remains in debate. While the brown bear's range has shrunk, and it has faced local extinctions, it remains listed as a least concern species by the IUCN, with a total population of approximately 200,000. Its principal range countries are Russia, the United States (mostly in Alaska), Canada, the Carpathian region (especially Romania), and Finland where it is the national animal. The brown bear is the most widely distributed of all bears. Brown bears are thought to have evolved from Ursus etruscus. The oldest fossils occur in China from about 0.5 million years ago. They entered Europe about 250,000 years ago, and North Africa shortly after. Brown bear remains from the Pleistocene period are common in the British Isles, where it is thought they outcompeted cave bears. The species entered Alaska 100,000 years ago, though they did not move south until 13,000 years ago.[6] It is thought that brown bears were unable to migrate south until the extinction of the much larger Arctodus simus.[7] Several paleontologists suggest the possibility of two separate brown bear migrations: grizzlies are thought to stem from narrow-skulled bears which migrated from northern Siberia to central Alaska and the rest of the continent, while Kodiak bears descend from broad-skulled bears from Kamchatka which colonised the Alaskan peninsula. Brown bear fossils discovered in Ontario, Ohio, Kentucky and Labrador show that the species occurred farther east than indicated in historic records.[6]Brown bears are massively built and heavy bodied animals. They have a large hump-like mass of muscle on their shoulders, which coupled with their long claws, provide brown bears with a great digging ability.[15] Brown bears have very large and curved claws, those present on the forelimbs being longer than those on the hind limbs. They may reach 5 to 6 centimetres (2.0 to 2.4 in) and sometimes 7 to 10 centimetres (2.8 to 3.9 in) along the curve.[11] They are never less than 6 centimetres (2.4 in) in length.[15] They are generally dark with a light tip with some forms having completely light claws.[11] Brown bear claws are longer and straighter than those of American black bears.[15] The claws are blunt, while those of a black bear are sharp. Adults have massive, heavily built concave skulls which are large in proportion to the body. The forehead is high and rises steeply.[15] The projections of the skull are well developed when compared to those of Asian black bears: the latter have sagittal crests not exceeding more than 19–20% of the total length of the skull, while the former have sagittal crests comprising up to 40–41% of the skull's length. Skull projections are more weakly developed in female brown bears than in males. The braincase is relatively small and elongated. There is a great deal of geographical variation in the skull, and presents itself chiefly in dimensions.[11] Grizzlies, for example, tend to have flatter profiles than European and coastal American brown bears.[16] Skull lengths of Russian bears tend to be 31.5 to 45.5 centimetres (12.4 to 17.9 in) for males, and 27.5 to 39.7 centimetres (10.8 to 15.6 in) for females. The width of the zygomatic arches in males is 17.5 to 27.7 centimetres (6.9 to 11 in), and 14.7 to 24.7 centimetres (5.8 to 9.7 in) in females.[11] Brown bears have very strong teeth: the incisors are relatively big and the canine teeth are large, the lower ones being strongly curved. The first three molars of the upper jaw are underdeveloped and single crowned with one root. The second upper molar is smaller than the others, and is usually absent in adults. It is usually lost at an early age, leaving no trace of the alveolus in the jaw. The first three molars of the lower jaw are very weak, and are often lost at an early age.[11] Although they have powerful jaws, brown bear jaws are incapable of breaking large bones with the ease of spotted hyenas.[17] The dimensions of brown bears fluctuate very greatly according to sex, age, individual, geographic location, and season. The normal range of physical dimensions for a brown bear is a head-and-body length of 1.7 to 2.8 meters (5.6 to 9.2 ft) and a shoulder height of 90 to 150 centimeters (
