Aikido

Aikido of Prince Edward Island offers self-defence training in the Japanese martial art of Aikido.

Aikido is a non-competitive martial art which relies on a combination of timing, balance, and body movements to redirect aggressive attacks. Aikido emphasizes self-defence techniques such as joint locks and throws to control an aggressor and neutralize their attack. Because Aikido does not rely on punching, kicking, or other striking to subdue an aggressor it can be used to end a conflict without brutality.

Aikido practice also helps develop strength, coordination, and flexibility as well as a calm and focused mind. In addition to unarmed techniques, the use of weapons including the jo (staff), bokken (wooden sword), and tanto (wooden knife), are incorporated into training to help develop proper distance, timing, and mental focus.
