Chetana Vikas: Sustainable Agriculture in Vidarbha, Maharashtra

The Crisis

Since 1995, over 300, 000 farmers have committed suicide in India due to debt, high cost of inputs, unpredictable rains and declining yields. This has been aggravated due to in effective and insufficient Government support . In the Cotton belt of the state of Maharashtra, nearly 10 farmers attempt suicide every day, and unsustainable policies such as the introduction of genetically-modified Bt-cotton have actually made the problem worse.

Chetana Vikas’s Strategy
  • Promoting a mixture of food and cash crops
  • Using various techniques of water conservation
  • Solar fences to protect crop from wild animals
  • Capacity building of farmers in finance and local market information
Chetana Vikas
  • Works in 100 villages of Wardha district in the Vidarbha region.
  • Trains marginal and debt-ridden farmers on techniques of low-input farming to enable self-reliance, food security and riddance from debt.
  • Runs a training center called Alternative Agricultural Resource Center for farmers, activists, NGOs, policymakers and scientists and also serves as a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences.
The Impact
  • 320 Kgs of seeds procured by farmers.
  • 150 farmers have taken up sustainable methods on 343 acres in 27 villages.
  • 23% of farmers are women.
  • People from across India attend training and workshops conducted by Chetana Vikas.

AID Portland has been supporting Chetana Vikas for several years and is currently working to help them expand their reach and impact.
