Just got back from a short, but amazing, trip overseas. I've been in eleven different countries this month and am very much suffering from withdrawal now that I'm home. I miss the constant excitement and especially miss all of the friends I made while out wandering. Many pictures, of course, to come. This one was taken somewhere over the ocean between Iceland and Scotland. I also spent some of the 'down time' while traveling thinking about how strange air travel really is, as common place as it is today. For myself, anyhow, it's easy to lose track of what a legitimately far distance you've traveled when you literally walk into a metal tube in your city, sit down for a few hours, and walk out of that same metal tube in a completely different part of the world. It also makes distances between the people you care about- both at home and the new ones you meet while away- seem a bit strange. Distance itself is not really an issue- you can literally be anywhere on earth in a matter of hours from right now- the only thing that really separates us is the funds to buy a new plane ticket. Which, for me, made saying goodbye to my new friends a little odd at the end of this trip. There's that familiarity that wants to invite everyone out for a drink or two Thursday night, or plan a weekend to hang out together in a few months- but then that nagging reality sets in that the people I want to spend time with are literally on the other side of the planet. Maybe I'm not the first to toy with these ideas in their head, but my jetlagged brain found the whole concept of time/distance fascinating and strange on the journey home this week.

I didn't think everything would fit in that little quart-sized ziploc baggie, but Carolee convinced me otherwise. She was correct. I should listen to her, she travels a fair amount. Thanks to Target's wall of travel-size goodies I got everything I need. I usually check my suitcase, but this is a short trip & I'm only taking a duffle & my messenger bag. I've only flown once since airlines started charging for checked bags (greedy fuckers), but we skated by w/o being charged because we'd purchased our tickets before this bit of fuckery went into effect. This time, no such luck. I just remembered, I have to stuff my SPF moisturizer in there, too.

Infant Flight Vest Travel Harness (Red)
Baby B Air is worn by the infant like a vest It is placed over the child s head and secured by adjustable straps on both sides under the baby s arms The third strap comes from behind between the baby s legs and buckles to the front with another adjustable strap The excess straps Velcro neatly to the vest so that there are no loose straps

For parents who often take to the skies with a baby in their lap, this light, stowable item may offer extra peace of mind when worn during flight. The soft cotton vest can be worn throughout a trip and three plastic buckles snap at sides and crotch, and the adult's seat belt passes through a nylon loop to secure child to parent. This harness would be a must-have accessory for the frequent-flying baby--if it were FAA approved for use during takeoff and landing. Currently it is not, a fact we felt the manufacturers should make much clearer than they do. During takeoff and landing, then, this simple vest/harness cannot (alas) replace the uncomfortable baby lap belts provided by the airlines, although it meets all FAA regulations for use during flight. --Richard Farr
