Tripel
Tripel
La Trappe Tripel (8% ABV) from the tap at De Koningshoeven Brewery while I waited for my Dutch language tour. I tried the Quadrupel at the Amsterdam Cafe in San Francisco the week before I left on vacation, so I started with the Tripel here. I don't remember much specific except that it's quite a tasty beer. Brouwerij de Koningshoeven (De Koningshoeven Brewery), founded in 1884 within the Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven Abbey, is one of seven Trappist breweries in the world, and the only one in The Netherlands (the remaining six are in Belgium). A Trappist beer is brewed under the control of Trappist monks. While there are other breweries associated with monasteries, there are strict requirements that a brewery must follow to be able to call its product a Trappist beer. These rules were established in 1997 to prevent commercial companies from abusing the Trappist moniker. 1. The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey, by or under control of Trappist monks. 2. The brewery, the choices of brewing, and the commercial orientations must obviously depend on the monastic community. 3. The economic purpose of the brewery must be directed toward assistance and not toward financial profit. The Koningshoeven Brewery, just outside Tilburg, is the most commercial of the Trappist breweries, run by a secular subsidiary of Bavaria Brewery, but the buildings and equipment are owned and controlled by the monks. It is also the only Trappist brewery that allows full access tours of the brewing facilities inside the abbey. In addition to beer, the monks produce delicious breads and chocolates that, as far as I know, are only for sale in the abbey gift shop. As a beer fan, I naturally wanted to visit, but slightly misjudged the journey to get here. It turned out to be about an hour and half train ride from Amsterdam to Tilburg, then 45 minutes wait to catch a bus from central Tilburg out into the country to the brewery. When I got there, I learned that the tours were given only in Dutch, and were full for the next 2 hours. So I spent a few hours in the bar sampling the beers, and then went on my 4th brewery tour of the vacation. They all look about the same, so I didn't miss too much in that area, but there were some interesting anecdotes about the brewery that I missed most of as I tried to follow along in the abbreviated, mixed up English guide they gave me. The beer and chocolates were worth it, though, especially after 3 weeks of bland pilsners.
Witte Trappist
Witte Trappist
Beer #2, Witte Trappist (5.5% ABV) from the tap at De Koningshoeven Brewery while I waited for my Dutch language tour. Not my favorite, but a pretty solid wheat beer. I had the Dubbel and Isid'or on the tour, but I think the Tripel or Quadrupel were my favorites.
