Take the first step in faith.
You don’t have to see the whole staircase
—just take the first step.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Having faith in the first step doesn’t mean you ignore your long-term goals, or your dreams.  Dreams are important!  Dr. King knew that—his “I have a dream” speech is the one we remember best.

But when you encounter moments when your goals seem beyond your reach, that’s the time to have faith and take the first step.

Have faith and confidence in your process!  Focus on the first step, and get started.  If you hit the snooze button, if you procrastinate, your dreams are still alive, but they are beyond your control.  If you identify the first step on the journey and focus on that, then you have taken control.

For example, if your goal is to make more money this year, don’t just focus on the actual dollars, but on the activities that will help you reach that mark, such as the number of listing appointments you need to make each month or the number of cold calls you need to make each week.

That’s the first step!

When the effective leader is finished with his work,
the people say it happened naturally.”

Lao Tzu

Often, an excellent leader does such a great job planning and managing, that it looks like everything happened on its own.  No amazing feats accomplished at the last second.

It’s true that clients need their realtor to be a leader—someone who can guide them through the process.  Part of that process is self-discovery.

Clients need to learn about themselves—their needs and wants—and they might even think they’re doing so by themselves.  If the process of self-discovery goes well, the clients might not even be aware of how much you helped them by asking the right questions and really listening to the answers.

You might even make it seem so effortless that the clients feel they did most of the work by themselves.  That’s OK—the good feelings you inspire will pay you back by generating referrals and repeat business.

Procrastination is one of the
most common and deadliest diseases
and its toll on success and happiness is heavy.
~Wayne Gretzky

When you procrastinate, you are sabotaging your own success. Consciously, you want to overcome your procrastination, but subconsciously, negative beliefs are running the show.

You need to remember that you are in a service business. When you wake up in the morning, you should be thinking "who can I help today?" If you really put your heart and soul into the joy of contributing to another person's life, I guarantee that you will be proactive in everything you do and the procrastination will simply fade away.

You need to do whatever you can to love your business, to get excited about helping people, and release any mental blocks that get in the way. The sooner you do that the sooner your business will grow.

Your opinion of yourself becomes your reality.
If you have all these doubts, then no one will believe in you
and everything will go wrong.
If you think the opposite, the opposite will happen,
 it’s that simple.
Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson

Starting with your parents, and then your teachers, your friends, and co-workers, the opinions and judgments of hundreds of people have crossed your path over the years.
But these opinions are not objective at all. People project onto you their own fears and fantasies. This can shape your personality, and you run the risk of letting it limit your range of behavior. It can become a mask that hardens on your face.
There is another, fearless way of approaching your life. It begins with understanding the role that willpower plays in your actions. When you raise your opinion of yourself and what you are capable of, it has a decided influence on what you do.  For instance, you feel more comfortable taking a chance, knowing that you are always able to get back up on your feet if it fails.
People are drawn to those who act boldly, and their attention and faith in you will have the effect of heightening your confidence.  This movement towards confidence has a self-fulfilling quality that is impossible to deny.

“You are never too old to set a new goal
or to dream a new dream.”

C.S. Lewis

We all want to be able to live our dreams, and it is by setting and regularly meeting our goals that we will get there.
The key is to set challenging, but realistic goals. The most important part is to clearly define those goals.  Be exact!
For example, it is great to set a goal that you will make an additional million dollars in sales, but it's even better to be detailed and exact by specifying that you will reach out to 10 past clients a month or place 5 new Craigslist ads a week.
Goals are a way of staying organized and making sure you are on track towards achieving your dreams.  Even a to-do list is an example of short-term goal setting!
It's never too late to dream a new dream, as long as you also set the goals that will help you to achieve it. Once you start meeting your goals on a regular basis you will be well on your way to making those dreams a reality!
What goals can you set for yourself today that will help you to achieve your dreams tomorrow?
