Professor Gary Carkin, Ph.D. specializes in teaching English through drama. Linking a theatre background to linguistics,
he teaches in the M.S. TEFL program at the Institute for Language Education at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester,
New Hampshire and gives workshops nationally and internationally relating drama techniques to language education.
This Readers' Theatre workshop will introduce students to the use of readers' theatre for language acquisition purposes. Starting with an explanation of the pedagogical and theoretical basis for readers' theatre as applied to language acquisition, pariticpants will explore techniques to build a readers' theatre performance, including visualization, utilization of the Englih phonetic system, work on stress, inotnation, and the evocation of emotion.
The workshop is non-lecture. All students will participate and learn by doing.
