Jan 12th Choices In older days, the family lived in a huge manse with pointed rooves, basements carved out of rock and teeeeny tiny cupboards. Lord knows how theymanaged to store anything during the Victorian excess period, but they left us with gorgeous, liveable expanses, huge kitchens and immmense, glady backyards, full of peonies and fruit trees esoteric. When I moved into a series of these homes in Toronto, it was to share the space communally with some 3 to 5 others- the upstairs became a second a partment, the basement housed a roomer, perhaps. We all shared food and rent, enjoying the stained glass windows and oak panelling, real wood floors and cupboards. In the sixties, people started looking for pop up and almost packable housing, easy living for those whose jobs took them all over the map. We all resented the tight row housing and the tiny rooms, the insistence upon verisimilitude, the dull barracks like existence of the 2.5 children, all raised in communities that had no character and way less access to the proximity of schooling, shopping and especially culture. Housing developments have this down - along with new housing (garden and its importance to sustinence is now reduced to a ridiculous postage stamp) the new community is a captive to the pop up commercial malls. In fact, there seems to be nothing else to do for young or old besides to go to the mall on the weekend. Even teens were able to scramble enough for a car in the old days, but where we lived (anywhere in the city) one had access to very affordable public transit. Nowadays, licensing, lessons and insurance cost about 6 to 10 thousand dollars, let alone the cost of a safetied vehicle, before anyone can drive. Even acknowledging that the governemmtn is assuring Canada of safe driving through thorough procedure (I agree with it) in our area the conservatives started actively challenging peoples right to work if they did not at least opearate a vehicle. Starting about 22 to 23 years ago, every backwoods hick who ever hired his relatives all at age 12 so they would have the money first started to openly discriminate against people with no legs, epilepsy, youth and slim income, the blind, many people with many types of condition. In a communally evil right wing backlash, they have not only tried to totally ignore all the human rights sanctions that our government ever put together, but they have also heavily congested and polluted someof our areas, like Ottawa, the capital cityof Canda. There are so many cars bumper to bumper in the city that travelling ten miles can take an hour and three quarters. Not to mention the ghastly barrage of 100% carbon monoxide, if one chooses to lunch at an outdoor bistro cafe. They have (in catering to some kinds of asthmatic and screening out indoor smoking facilities in any kind of industry) pushed all their smoking workers (some of whom smoke because of asthma) into asthma-provoking heavy exhaust emissions, asthma-provoking 10 to 30 degree below cold weather, and now, they have forbidden the right to sit in outdoor restaurants to smoke, in case their weenie friends the non-smokers get a whiff of herb during their 100% monoxide lunch sniff. New and fragile cars, the new ticki-tacki of commercial intentions are purchased for the price of a down payment on a four bedroom home, even if the young working people have to live in them. The conservatives did all this to screen out monsters- people with disabilities, while priding themselves upon being perfection in all ways, or "monied", the new signs and seals of wellness and spiritual enlightnenment. We have our choices. Now is the time to think clearly about how green (or whether it is polite to the people at all?) a conservative vote will be, come the spring.

To paraphrase Emily Dickinson, there is a light that exists in spring that isn’t present any other time of the year. It’s not just the explosion of green and the return of warm, diffusing air; sunnier dispositions go a long way towards brightening the season. After what seemed an especially long and busy winter, I took extra notice of the Vernal equinox this past weekend and welcomed the arrival of spring with some time outdoors. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of spending a similar afternoon roaming around Malibu Creek State Park with the artistic duo Candy and Nicho, otherwise known as Noferin. I shot a prototype of their very first toy – a character named “Pandacake” from a series of innovative wooden figures. In the time since, Noferin has sold out several variations of their original Art-Toys. They’ve now moved on to more accessible and affordable “blind-box” figures that retain their signature style with wood from sustainable sources. I took a pair of these male and female “Jibibuts” back to the park in Malibu to capture a moment at play in the warm light of spring. The resulting image will be displayed in the upcoming show "We Heart Wood" at Munky King’s gallery on Melrose. The show opens on April 8th.
