154 Tolman St. Westbrook Me USA. I Grew Up In This House
I found this cool photo of what appeared to be a similar version of the big old Victorian house I grew up in in a pile of random old photos in a local flea market a few years ago. It was quite the surprise to discover it was the very same house I grew up in. When I brought the photo home I held it up to a mirror, only to see the photo had simply been printed backwards. At the time this photo was taken, negatives were very large and made of glass , so flipping the glass negative upside down would have been the easiest mistake in the world to make, My parents bought this amazing old ark of a place back in 1963 when I was five and my brother was three. An old woman had lived there alone for most of her life and in her olden days, had burned nearly ever stick of household furniture in the fireplace to stay warm. In the mid 1960s, the city of Westbrook, Maine had listed this house as one of the next houses to be condemned and demolished. My folks bought it for very little money, mostly the back-taxes owed to the city. By the time we moved in, our entire neighborhood were already terrified of the place, adults included. The place was seriously creepy. It had no insulation, broken pipes everywhere, thousands of bats residing in the3rd floor attic, scary bad wring and it had weathered to a dull slate-gray color and hadn't seen a speck of paint in well over 40 years. Later, when my mother took it upon herself to scape and paint it, it took nearly 80 gallons of paint! Work on our lovely old house was an ongoing work in progress for all of my childhood and when it was finally finished, we moved to a modern house... go figure. This place really was a wonderful place to grow up. Our family moved in 1971. I still miss it. I still love old houses. My current house is a big old Carpenter Gothic built in 1912. I wouldn't take the gift of a new house.
Can't wait 'til it's in my house!
My grad-school mattress & frame have finally given out, and I've been sleeping on the couch for about 2 months while I saved for a real bed. Thank God I have a comfortable couch! Anyway, I finally picked out my new bedroom furniture! I have been bed (s)hopping for weeks and everything looked the same, so I started bringing my camera. I snapped this while avoiding salespeople, please excuse the terrible quality! When I looked at it I knew it was the right one. It looks nice and not too "old" but also like something I'd find at my grandmother's house. I love it so much! My first real furniture! (IKEA is real too but somehow...)
