Beekman Tower Hotel
Beekman Tower Hotel 49th and 1st / 3 Mitchell Place New York, NY 10017 Penthouse restaurant on the 26th floor - Top of the Tower has 360° views of Manhattan. Beekman Tower Hotel, formerly the Panhellenic Tower, is an Art Deco skyscraper at the corner of First Avenue and East 49th Street. It was designed by John Mead Howells (who also designed the Daily News Building) and was built in 1929. The Panhellenic Tower was a club and hotel for women who had belonged to national Greek-letter sororities, it provided affordable housing for many women entering the workforce during the period. In 2006 Timothy Haskin, a former managing director with Tishman Hotel, led a an Irish-based investment partnership that paid $151 million to the Denihan Hospitality Group for the 172-room Beekman Tower Hotel and the 187-room Eastgate Tower Hotel. These two hotels sold for $420,000 a hotel room. The two properties were expected to be renovated - but renovation costs rocketed up from approximately $24 million to $103 million and stymied the partnership to proceed. Benjamin Denihan bought the hotel in 1963. The building was gutted and turned it into an apartment-hotel. The hotel drew much of its business from visitors to the United Nations that needed rooms with kitchens for weeks at a time. The building incorporates Gothic-inspired Art Deco ornament by the leading architectural sculptor Rene Chambellan.

May 2009. Affordable, comfortable, direct subway and bus routes to Manhattan. Located between La Guardia and JFK with airport shuttle bus. Street noise was filtering in front room but it sounded much quieter after riding the subway to and from the city center... Base for the May 2009 New York visit.
