The Art-in-the-Garden program inspires appreciation of our natural world through the expression of artists in open green spaces. This art installation titled "Catawampus" is a whimsical journey through natural structures that evoke the primitive and modern. As Patrick Dougherty's Creative Career evolved as - artist, sculptor, and builder - he was inspire to learn about primitive building techniques. Combining his carpentry skills with his love for nature he experimented with tree saplings as construction material. His work quickly went from single pieces on conventional pedestals to monumental scale installations and environments. which required saplings by the truckloads. During the last two decades, he has built over 150 works throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. The willow used for "Catawampus" comes from the Willow Farm in Pescadero CA, they grow over 100 species of Willow to make furniture, provide willows for Midwestern wind breaks and for the floral trade. California has over 25 native species of Willow that typically grow in riparian (streamside) habits with different kinds growing in all of California ecosystems from coastal areas to alpine meadows. Willow has many properties that make it useful to humans. Most California native tribe used willows for basketry and building. The "Studs" of buildings were often willow. Willow requires a lot of water and is not recommended for most Southern California Landscapes
