The old church of Belgirate, on our Lago Maggiore.
My friend Paolo is an architect who is active in the preservation of our local artistic and historical heritage. Last week he brought me to visit the old church of Belgirate, a very small town oh the shores of Lago Maggiore, one of the beautiful lakes just to the north of my town. The church, which he was going to survey, dates back to the early Middle Ages, about 1.000 years ago, even if it has been rebuild and enlarged many times during the following centuries. The old church, build originally in romanesque style, is located above the modern town of Belgirate on the lakeshore, with a superb view over most of the the surface of long and narrow Lago Maggiore. The tall belltower is one of its most ancient parts and is made of gray local stone. While Paolo was busy with his survey, I read most of the story concerning of the old church and shot some pictures with the idea of presenting them on Flickr. As I do now. I have a few more pictures, should you be interested. Just ask to see them.
The interior of the old church of Belgirate
This part of the old curch of Belgirate was rebuild during the early Middle Ages, with the typical low vaulted ceiling of Romanesque churches. The decoration was done on later times, with the exception of the fresco painting with 3 saints on the wall nearthe door.
