Panic in the Aisles of Dominicks
Panic in the Aisles of Dominicks
A word about panic. Well, first of all, I guess having lived in Buffalo, NY kind of desensitizes me to huge snowstorms. I know that as long as I have enough food around for a couple of days, I'm good. As I keep telling people, you CAN survive for days on popcorn and cookies. It might not be ideal nutrition but it sure is fun! I'm also the type of person that doesn't believe the weather reports anymore because they all sound over-hyped. Seriously, they make *every* storm sound like it's going to be the big one, which is actually very dangerous for when the big one really happens and people like me don't take it seriously. But honestly, I understand people in rural areas panicking but on the north side of Chicago, I've lived in 5 different apartments from Edgewater to Ukrainian Village and I've never been more than a block from a major grocery store-either Dominicks or Jewel. When the blizzard first started, I stopped off at Trader Joe's for some feta cheese (I had a craving) and I saw then how huge portions of the stock-cereal, potato chips, canned foods looked like it had been raided. People, a blizzard is not a zombie attack. You do realize this, right? As Douglas Adams might say, "DON'T PANIC." This is Dominicks yesterday-that's right, it was still OPEN. I walked a block there because I usually get eggs from local farms delivered but it was postponed until Sat (understandably). Thank God I didn't need milk. But yeah, still OPEN. I understand when people worry about their heat and electricity going out and I understand large families in rural areas panicking but to me it seems like everyone still over-reacted here a bit. I mean, I bike to the grocery store and even I have enough veggie burgers to tide me over in case I was holed in for, like, 2 weeks. Also, people, you won't die if you miss one meal, I promise. I mean, haven't you ever read Cormac McCarthy's The Road? You can totally run from cannibals at the end of the world with a couple of cans a day WITH A KID. I know, I know, that was "fiction." Also open within a block of my apartment yesterday: Subway (sandwiches), McDonalds, Sweet Cakes bakery, my local record store-Permanent Records (I don't advise eating records. It seems kind of inhumane), the corner store, and Dominicks. One more thing, in the case of a dire emergency where we'd all starve if we didn't raid and loot the nearest grocery store, you'd want to leave something left for that effort, right? That's all.
