The 2009 Report on Commercial and Industrial Carpet Sweepers and Cleaning Equipment Excluding Vacuum Cleaners: World Market Segmentation by City
The 2009 Report on Commercial and Industrial Carpet Sweepers and Cleaning Equipment Excluding Vacuum Cleaners: World Market Segmentation by City
This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "commercial and industrial carpet sweepers and cleaning equipment excluding vacuum cleaners" for the year 2009. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales.

Tube bombers: FUCK YOU and the horses you rode in on! Being fairly new to the city I have to say I am amazed at the relative calmness that was over London today. It wasn't quite business as usual, but it was a good sense of 'we knew it was coming and here it is'. Or maybe it is years of IRA attacks that made everyone else be less freaked out than me...the strangest feeling- but that was also mostly in the beginning, once the scale and amount started hitting the city it was a more of frustrated anger that was bubbing up. The first thing that goes through one's mind is this endless scanning of people you know - who works in the area, who takes what tube where, who would be affected... then you hit the phone - text messages of 'you ok' flood in at the same time as you send them out. Everyone is checking up on everyone else, all my friends are accounted for - bless'ed!!! Walking home, rain and all, everywhere people looked up and others in the eye, very non-London! Usually people look at the fleck of land in front of them..but today, as I walked the hour from Westminster to Camden everyone looked up, looked defiant as we passed eachother in the rain in our suits and high heels. My heart goes out to those injured or worse - So fuck you bombers - we unify in your face! (p.s this was of course not taken today as the tube is shut - it is an old photo of mine and sorry for the out of focus - was drunk when I took it)
