Empowerment and Action Research:
Personal growth, professional development, and social change in educational and community settings

The ‘family’ of action research includes a diverse collection of orientations and methods related
to personal growth, professional development, and social change. A common feature in all the
orientations is empowerment. This year’s USD Action Research Conference takes up the theme
of empowerment in action research at the personal, professional, and political levels.
Jack Whitehead is a lecturer in Education at the University of Bath where he has worked for thirty
years. His main purpose is to contribute to the reconceptualization of educational theory from its
propositional form to a living form. Living educational theories are constituted by the explanations
that individuals produce for their educational influence in their own learning, in the learning of
others and in the learning of social formations. Dr. Whitehead has written numerous publications on
the subject of Action Research with his colleague Jean McNiff, Professor of Educational Research
at St. Mary's University College, London.
